Zubeen Garg's death on September 19, 2025, has sent shockwaves through the nation. As a legendary icon of Assam and a symbol of the region's rich musical culture, the singer's untimely demise has deeply affected the people of the state. Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma has also become involved in the medical and funeral process that followed after Zubeen's death. Amidst this, the CM shared that a second post-mortem will be conducted in response to public demand.
Zubeen Garg passed away in Singapore on September 19, 2025, after a scuba diving incident. The singer's wife, Garima Saikia, stated that Zubeen had suffered seizures before. Hence, it was speculated that he might have passed away after a seizure underwater. After a post-mortem by Singapore authorities, the cause of death was ruled as drowning. Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma took to his social media and announced that another post-mortem would be conducted at the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) in Assam.
The CM, in a statement to PTI, shared that the reason for the second post-mortem was the massive public demand. He also mentioned that consent was taken from the family of Zubeen Garg for this. CM Sarma stated:
“A new demand has cropped up on social media on Tuesday seeking another post-mortem of Garg’s body in Assam. In view of that and after taking consent of his family, the state government has decided to conduct another post-mortem on Garg’s body in Guwahati on Tuesday."
CM Biswa also mentioned that he personally did not think it 'necessary' to have another autopsy after the Singaporean authorities had already done so. However, the state government had decided to conduct another post-mortem to rule out any foul play and also to prevent 'any section to indulge in any kind of politics over Zubeen'. The Assam CM said:
“After the Singapore doctors had conducted the autopsy, I don't think it was necessary as they have more technical expertise, but there should not be any scope for any section to indulge in any kind of politics over Zubeen."
Fans have suspected foul play, not an unfortunate mishap, that led to Zubeen Garg's death by drowning. Especially after a video surfaced that allegedly showed Zubeen being forced into the water, despite his apprehension. The singer's associate, Shekhar Goshwami, allegedly encouraged him to go into the sea, as seen in the video. However, Shekhar has reportedly presented an alibi, stating that it was Sandipan Garg, Tanmoy Phukan, and Abhimanyu who had taken the singer to the sea, while he was unaware. People have grown more sceptical over the incident after these contradictory pieces of evidence.
