Zubeen Garg’s untimely death has sent shockwaves in Assam and the entire nation. His huge fanbase is mourning the talented singer’s death, and since then, there has been a sense of restlessness among his fans. Known as the ‘heartthrob of the Northeast,’ Zubeen passed away in Singapore on September 19, 2025, at the age of 52, reportedly due to drowning.
On September 30, 2025, Zubeen Garg’s manager, Siddhartha Sharma and the North East India Festival organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta were detained. Shyamkanu was taken into custody at Delhi airport before being flown to Guwahati. On the other hand, Siddharth was arrested in Gurugram.
The two were brought to Guwahati, produced in court and were sent to 14 days of custody. The Assam government had constituted a 10-member SIT, led by Special DGP M P Gupta, to investigate the singer's death. The SIT issued notices to several people, including Mahanta, Sharma and members of the Singapore Assam Association and those who had gone to Singapore for the festival.
Soon after Zubeen Garg’s death, his fans attacked Zubeen’s manager, Siddhartha Sharma’s house in Guwahati. The police had been looking for Mahanta and Sharma and raided their houses, but they were not found there. The SIT has already interrogated Zubeen's drummer, Shekhar Jyoti Goswami, who reportedly accompanied Garg on his yacht trip in Singapore, after which the singer drowned.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had warned Zubeen’s manager and the festival organiser to make their statements before October 6. In a Facebook live video, he said:

“As the Durga Puja festival will begin, we don’t want them to come right now. But after Dashami, they have to come. They must come to Guwahati on October 6 and present their statements. If they do not want to present themselves before the CID, which has been probing the incidents leading to Garg’s death by drowning in the sea in Singapore on September 19. They can approach the court.”
Zubeen was scheduled to perform at the North East India Festival on September 20-21, 2025. However, during a recreational diving session, he went into the water without a life jacket; his wife claims he suffered from a seizure attack there and was rushed to the Singapore General Hospital. Despite medical efforts, he passed away at 2:30 pm on Friday, September 19, 2025.
Zubeen Garg’s wife, Garima Saikia, his sister, Palme Borthakur, and his uncle, Manoj Kumar Borthakur, filed a complaint with the Assam CID. The family has demanded a ‘thorough probe’ into the circumstances of his death. Manoj confirmed to PTI that the complaint was sent via email. He said that they want a thorough probe into the circumstances of Zubeen’s death.
