Zarine Khan Saw Handsome Sanjay 'Black-Bloated' After He Was Burned, Shared How Patron Saint Helped

Zarine Khan married Sanjay Khan in 1996, after their courtship. The duo had been each other's soulmates, and even after several ups and downs, they had always been together, until her death separated them. Zarine was a strong pillar of support for her husband, always standing by him through the hard phases of his life. It was back in 1989 when a massive fire broke out on the set of The Sword of Tipu Sultan, trapping several people inside Premier Studios in Mysuru, India.

Zarine Khan recalled watching her once-handsome husband, Sanjay Khan, turning black and bloated after suffering 65 per cent burns

Sanjay Khan did not back out of helping those trapped in the fire, which spread rapidly after a faulty electrical wiring fault. Well, it was Sanjay who suffered 65 per cent burns and had to stay in the hospital for 13 months, along with going through 72 surgeries. It was Zarine Khan who stood like a strong pillar by her husband; even her heart was shattered into a million pieces, seeing him in such a state. She once recalled watching her handsome husband turn bloated and black with burns.

Talking to iDiva, Zarine shared that when she went to the hospital, doctors said that he had only a 10 per cent chance to survive, and her world just turned upside down. She recalled how Sanjay Khan said that he would be fine and come out. With teary eyes, Zarine recalled:

"He suffered 65 per cent burns. The doctor said, ‘He’s got just 10 per cent chance of survival’. My world shattered. When I went into the room I saw that this once good-looking man had turned into someone black and bloated. Abbas said, ‘Babes, I’m fine, I’ll be out in a week!’ I too cheered him up, ‘Yes, I heard that from the doctors, you’ll be out soon’."

Zarine Khan shared how her patron saint helped Sanjay Khan during his 13-month hospitalisation

In the same interview with iDiva, Zarine Khan shared that it was her patron saint, Sai Baba of Shirdi, who helped Sanjay pull through 13 months of hospitalisation and 72 surgeries. Zarine mentioned that when Abbas (Sanjay) was rushed to the hospital, an old man gave a silver foil while asking the doctor to put it on the actor's hand. When the doctor followed the instructions and put the silver foil on his hand, the bleeding stopped. Later, it was discovered to be a German product. Sharing more about the same, Zarine Khan said:

"When Abbas was being rushed to Jaslok Hospital, an old man, pushed through the crowd and gave a silver foil to Dr Bush (Sanjay’s doctor) saying, ‘Put this on him, it’s the latest’. Dr Bush put it on one of Abbas’ hands. The next day, he noticed that blood had stopped oozing from that hand. Later, we discovered it was a German product and procured it."

In the same interview, Zarine Khan shared how they had to compensate the families of 54 victims. Zarine shared that she was earning from her business, which in a way helped them, and they also had to sell some of the land to compensate the victims. Zarine shared that she couldn't in any way let her husband's spirit go away. She revealed that they took Abbas to the US for hand surgery, and that he eventually recovered. Zarine had been through the ups and downs in Sanjay Khan's life, and he also credited her by saying that she was the best thing that had happened to her.

For the unversed, it was on November 7, 2025, when Zarine Khan passed away at the age of 81. He had been suffering from age-related ailments, and reportedly, a sudden cardiac arrest claimed her life. Her kids performed her funeral and last rites on the same day in Hindu customs.
