Yuzvendra Chahal and Dhanashree Verma got married back in December 2020. Well, the wedding was short-lived, and within just 18 months, they were granted divorce. Dhanashree reportedly got Rs. 4.75 crore alimony for her divorce from Yuzvendra Chahal. While the ex-couple didn't react to the buzz, it ended up creating a debate online. While some feel that the alimony for someone in Dhanashree's status doesn't justify what is tagged as 'equality', others argue with valid points.
Since the last few months, several incidents have been catching up the headlines that raised questions about men's security and safety. For instance, there was Atul Subhash, and Manav Sharma, and such nerve-chilling happenings have left people concerned. Amid this, 'alimony' comes as a huge topic of discussion. Alimony is court-ordered financial support that one spouse has to provide to the other during the divorce or separation for maintenance.
Dhanashree Verma and Yuzvendra Chahal's marriage lasted for 18 months, and they had no kids, thus, the dancer getting alimony in crores left people discussing the same. Netizens have raised a point about 'feminism' talking about 'equality' while asking what is 'equal' in this case. They further used the term 'gold digger', which often gets tagged to celebrity wives and is quite offensive to anyone it is said about. Well, now the question on this matter remains that while people have a problem with this term being used on anyone, then how could things like a person getting crores in alimony, that too, despite being well-settled, and having no kids, be justified?
While the intention was not to criticise any gender, this is indicated to point out the flaws in corrupted laws, which seemingly back women, and this issue is being heaved on Indian men continuously, for which there are significant changes in their perspective about opting for marriage. At this time, the one question, which is being raised is where are the voices that demand gender equality? While alimony was in the works to help out those wives who are financially dependent on their husbands, it's now being used as a tool against men in the present time, and this is what is a collective opinion in today's time with the recent happenings.
For example, in September 2024, a district judge was granted a divorce and the reason was his wife's cruel behaviour. While the Punjab and Haryana High Court granted the divorce, Rs. 30 lakh alimony was fixated for the wife. There have been several incidents like this, which have been raising serious questions.

Soon after the debate about Dhanashree Verma's alimony speculations began, netizens have been sharing their opinions. While some have been slamming the idea of alimony to someone who has her own status, others are supporting it by saying that for a woman, the tag of divorce is rather more effective than for a man. Others also asked people to understand that the couple parted ways on mutual terms.
One user penned, "Alimony was meant for women who sacrificed careers for marriage. But when an educated, financially independent woman takes Rs 4.25 Cr for an 18-month marriage, what exactly is being compensated here? If a man did this, he’d be called a scammer. Why the double standards? I'd love to hear your opinion on my podcast too. Kinda similar lines."
Arguing on this, another user penned, "In India, is a second marriage as easy for a woman as it is for a man? Does the label "divorcee" apply equally to both? Divorce affects men and women differently, and only the couple truly understands the reasons behind it, as it is a deeply personal matter. It is important not to use harsh words against anyone."
