DC's Aquaman has been one of the most reliable box-office forces ever. It is one of the rare successes in a star-studded universe. But as James Gunn and Peter Safran have rebuilt the DC Universe (DCU) right up from the ground, fans have long been curious to know if the King of Atlantis will ever return for a third solo film. Since Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom had officially closed the chapter on the old DCEU, the question is not only about the story, but even about survival in a newly restructured superhero world.
Presently, there are no official plans for Aquaman 3. According to Warner Bros, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom was the final movie of the old DCEU timeline, marking the end of a decade-long cinematic universe. According to Empire Magazine, director, James Wan has confirmed that he would consider returning for the film's new installment, but only with one condition: that he will have the same creative freedom he had while directing the first two films. However, since DCU is now under new leadership, there is no certainty about it. James Wan told Empire:
"I'd be open to another if I got the same freedom I've had on these first two. But I'm not sure what direction [Gunn and Safran] are going in."

His comments have hinted at how the reboot has placed Aquaman's future in suspense. The even bigger question is whether the new DCU even has space for old Aquaman. James had previously stated that while some actors may return in their roles, the new canon will feature other projects, whereas Aquaman was not part of their lineup. James clarified on social media that nothing is canon until 'CC' and "‘Legacy",,’ suggesting that their older storylines may not transfer into the new universe at all. Since there are no promising signals from DC Studios that 'Arthur Curry' may have a further stodyline for chapter 3, the chances of a fully completed Aquaman 3 are slim.

Adding to uncertainty, Jason Momoa's chances of being in the film are also in doubt. The star who has portrayed 'Arthur Curry' for a decade has said that he 'highly doubts' a third instalment of the film will be made. Sharing his views with the media, Jason noted that he did not see a lighthearted direction for the character. He hinted that he personally does not envision the franchise continuing the way fans want. Notably, Jason Momoa did not completely rule out the idea; instead, he suggested that if the audiences make a strong demand, the studio can consider it. At the same time, several insiders claim that Jason may join the new DCU as 'Lobo', a popular anti-hero, making it even less likely that he will return as Aquaman.

Despite the less hope, the legacy of Aquaman to continue remains strong. The first film was released in 2018 and was directed by James Wan. It became the highest-grossing DC film of all time, earning over USD 1.15 billion worldwide. Its sequel, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, released in 2023, closed the DCEU storyline by bringing 'Arthur' and 'Orm 'together to stop 'Black Manta's destructive plans. The world has further expanded in animations with Aquaman: King of Atlantis miniseries and other more comic-inspired content, adding mrore aspects to the story.
