It was in 1994 that Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith met each other for the very first time on the set of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. Back then, Jada auditioned for the role of Will Smith's on-screen girlfriend. Although she couldn't bag the role there, Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith formed a strong bond with each other. This connection was a 'huge surprise' for Will Smith.

The duo eventually started dating after the actor-rapper split from his ex-wife, Sheree Zampino. The couple made their public appearance after this, and they remained together throughout the years. In 1997, they were questioned about their plans to get engaged, and Jada joked about the same, stating:

"We were just lying there, going to sleep."

In 1998, Jada and Smith welcomed their first son, Jaden Smith. It was Will's second child; his first, with his ex-wife, was a boy, Trey. Jada calls Trey her 'bonus child'. It was two years later, in 2000, when Jada and Will welcomed their second child, a baby girl, Willow Smith.

In 2005, Will Smith talked about his relationship with Jada Smith while promoting his film, Hitch. He shared that the first date was all about talking, and it was intense, so much so that they didn't really care about where the first date even took place. After interacting, Will Smith and Jada understood there was potential for heat. Will added that he always had this thing that he would make sure that the girl liked him before he approached her. Sharing more about the same, Will said:

"There wasn't a lot of research to do because I'd seen her TV shows and movies. And we had two mutual friends sort of brokering our relationship. . . . I was one of those guys who always had a reconnaissance team to make sure that the girl liked me before I even approached. If there was somebody I was vibin', it was always about somebody else arranging the interaction.”

When Will Smith and Jada Smith sparked speculations about an open marriage

It was back in 2013 when Jada, in an interview with HuffPost, shared that Will could do anything he wanted, as long as he could look in the mirror. She also added that Will could be who he wanted to be, and that it was his to do, not hers, and vice versa. This comment made a stir, with people wondering if the couple was in an open relationship. Later, Jada took to her FB and clarified that they aren't in an open relationship in a literal sense, but they were open to doing whatever they could because they trust each other. She said:

"Should we be in relationships with individuals who we can not entrust to their own values, integrity, and LOVE...for us??? Here is how I will change my statement...Will and I BOTH can do WHATEVER we want, because we TRUST each other to do so. This does NOT mean we have an open relationship...this means we have a GROWN one."

The duo had their fair share of downs in their marriage, and it led them to separate after trying for a long time. It was during that time only that Jada was in a relationship with August Alsina. Will thought he would never talk to Jada, but they couldn't stay apart, and they reconciled, but on the terms of being a separated couple. In 2017, the couple celebrated their anniversary, while the next year, the actor said that they tag themselves as married anymore, but rather call each other 'life partners'.

In October 2023, Jada stated that there was never a divorce, and they promised each other that they would not be the reason for each other to divorce, and she couldn't break that promise ever since. They are continuing to work through that. Will, on the other hand, told Entertainment Tonight:

"I have always been blessed that there has never been a time in my life when I didn't look to the side and have a ride or die right there. Jada is one of the most gangsta ride-or-dies I've ever had."
