Wife Smiles As Husband Gives Life Long Savings As Alimony Post Divorce, Netizens Say, 'Gold Digger'

Marriages in India today are crumbling like paper. The most talked about terms nowadays have been divorce and alimony. Whether it is in urban or rural areas, the divorce rates are increasing. Another fancy term is alimony, which is maintenance that most women claim after separation. Now, a video has gone viral on the internet where a wife looked content as her husband gave her his lifelong savings as alimony post-separation.

A woman could not stop smiling when her husband gave his lifelong income as alimony to her

After a divorce, a spouse can ask for maintenance, also known as spousal support. Varied types of alimony can be claimed according to the provisions given by different personal laws and the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973. A video went viral, where a man was seen handing his lifelong savings to his wife, as directed by the judge in court. She could be seen smiling at her best form as she received the alleged alimony amount. The clip went viral on Reddit, and netizens noted the sadness in the man's eyes. His breaking expression made social media users terribly upset. It is unclear about the type of alimony the lady claimed reportedly and whether she also had a child.

As seen in the clip, the woman was dressed in a black kurta and red dupatta. The man was seen wearing an orange jacket, and after signing in what looked like some court paper, on the instruction of the lawyer, he was seen handling the alleged alimony amount. 

Netizens had huge issues with the woman smiling

One user commented, "I don't. Maybe they did take dowry, but that is not what you should do in that kind of sitting. Like why are you laughing on his face??" Another one commented, "The vicious grin and content in her makes me disgusted." A third one even wrote, "Does she look like she was really a victim in need here? The system is pathetic and men need to really reconsider marriage." The woman was also called a gold digger, and an angry netizen also commented, "We need a systematic change where any lawyer or judge or police cut a deal under the table with the woman filing false charges, they should be declared guilty by default and be hanged immediately without trial and no exceptions."

Alimony rules as per different personal laws

The Hindu Marriage Act of 1955 (Sections 24 & 25) gives both permanent and interim alimony. According to Muslim law, maintenance is given during the iddat time which is 3 months post-separation under the Sharia law and Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Divorce) Act, 1986. Well, under Christian Law, Sections 36 and 37 under the Indian Divorce Act of 1869 give alimony for Christian partners. In India, child support and alimony are the financial responsibilities that arise after the divorce. Now, apart from a lot of celebrity divorces taking place and stars claiming huge alimony amounts, conversations related to alimony claims have been common even among the middle class.
