Why Did HGTV Star Nicole Curtis' Custody Battle With Ex-Boyfriend, Shane Maguire Turn Messy?

Nicole Curtis is the host of the HGTV and DIY Network's hit show, Rehab Addict. Nicole has been balancing her professional life along with being a single mother. She recently hit the headlines after a leaked footage featured Nicole using a racial slur during filming the show, Rehab Addict season 9. She didn't excuse the use and apologised to the community immediately.

This is not the first time that Nicole has been in the headlines. She had previously garnered attention during the custody battle of her 34-month-old son, Harper. It was one of the most difficult phases of her life. Let us read on to know more about her life and the legal war she has been embroiled in with her ex-boyfriend, Shane Maguire.

Why did Nicole Curtis break up with her ex-boyfriend, Shane Maguire?

The Rehab Addict host dated Minnesota-based businessman Shane Maguire for several years before they called it quits. In May 2015, Nicole gave birth to her and Shane’s son, Harper. In her memoir Better Than New, Nicole revealed the reason for her split from Shane and said she learned of her pregnancy shortly after her 38th birthday. 

However, when she told about the same to her boyfriend, Shane Maguire, his reaction was not what she expected. Sadly, Nicole and Shane ended their relationship soon after Nicole revealed she was expecting their baby. Penning about the same, she wrote:

“I had wanted my fabulous Mister to look at me with tears in his eyes and say what I was thinking: that this was the greatest thing we’d never asked for.”

Nicole Curtis had a messy custody battle with Shane Maguire

Six months after Harper’s birth, Shane sued Nicole for joint custody of their son. The couple had a legal battle for two years while fighting different disputes. In 2016, Shane filed a suit and stated that the Rehab Addict host did not want his overnight visits until their son was two years old. The judge ruled in his favour and asked Nicole to pay Shane for missed parenting time and legal fees.

Over the year, tension between Nicole and Shane’s custody battle increased. In 2017, Shane alleged that Nicole was using the long distance between them as one of the reasons to keep their son away from him. Not just this, he also alleged that she was using breastfeeding as an excuse to keep Harper from spending the night with him.

The custody battle turned ugly when Shane stated that Nicole could pump breast milk, despite her continuing to have trouble producing enough milk to pump. This resulted in Nicole having to produce breast milk in front of a court-appointed third party. This incident agitated Nicole so much that she voiced her concerns through her IG handle. Discussing her ordeal, Nicole penned:

“Being court ordered to pump rather than feed my baby the only way he knows how. So they could document that yes, indeed, my body doesn't produce enough milk by pumping.”

Nicole Curtis’s past relationship

Before her broken relationship with Shane, Nicole was married to Steven Lane, with whom she has a son, Ethan. Following her split from Steven, Nicole started dating Shane, but that relationship ended soon as well. In an interview with Country Living magazine, Nicole stated:

“I would give anything to have a husband that loved me and supported me and, you know, took the kids out for pizza while I designed, but I just have never had that.”
