Hollywood’s favourite comedian, Jim Carrey, is leading the headlines for his recent red carpet appearence as the actor looked completely unrecognisable. Some stated it was the effect of a plastic surgery and some thought that the actor had been cloned. Carrey is regarded as one of the most iconic comedians of his time. With box office hits like Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, The Mask, Dumb and Dumber, Carrey carved his name in Hollywood.
While Carrey’s professional life saw many highs, his marriage was tragic. Especially his first marriage to Melissa Womer, which lasted for six years. Womer supported Carrey when he was a nobody, and he, too, was aware of her place in his life. However, despite struggling to keep the relationship together, the duo had an ugly split. Let us read on to know every detail about it.

Jim Carrey was struggling to make a career as a stand-up comedian when he met Melissa Womer at the Comedy Store. He was a performer there, and she was a cocktail waitress. It was Womer, who noticed Carrey’s talent and encouraged him. Once, she spoke about Carrey’s talent and revealed that he had a charm that drew his audience to him. After dating each other for two years, Womer and Carrey tied the knot in 1987.

At the time of their wedding, Womer was pregnant with their daughter, Jane Carrey. Before their wedding, Carrey had nothing but a failed sitcom, The Duck Factory and a stand-up routine. His audience was bewildered by his comic acts, but Melissa trusted his talent and saw a future with him. By 1990, his sitcom crashed, and he was even booed as a stand-up comedian.

Soon after, Carrey was approached about a new sketch show, In Living Colour, which changed his life forever. Carrey’s goofiness in the sketch was loved by the audience, and he began to receive the recognition he was seeking. Soon after, his cult film, Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, was released, and he achieved immense fame. However, somewhere in between, his personal life was sacrificed.

In 1994, Carrey appeared in Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, The Mask, and Dumb and Dumber, which changed his career and made him one of the top stars. The success of these films made Carrey the first comic actor to receive an upfront USD 20 million salary. However, the comedian’s transition changed the course of his personal life. His newfound fame made him arrogant and turned his head into clouds. So, he wasn’t able to lead his normal home life. Womer recalled telling him:
“You must come home and put your feet back on the ground and take your garbage out like everyone else, or I can't be married to you.”

Soon after, Carrey decided to pursue his Hollywood dreams and filed for divorce from Womer in November 1994. Womer revealed during an interaction with The Rolling Stone that Carrey was not the same person she married. He had changed after fame hit his head; as a result, he only wished to enjoy success as a single man. In her words:
“He's not good husband material. Marriage takes empathy, commitment and sacrifice. The dude has changed.”
While he was riding high professionally, the comedian was also attracting a lot of female attention. By the time Carrey and Womer’s 1995 divorce was finalised, he was already seeing his Dumb and Dumber co-star, Lauren Holly, who later became his second wife. There were rumours of infidelity, but Lauren later claimed that she started seeing Carrey when he was already separated from Womer.

It was a shock for Carrey’s fans to know that the man who made people laugh their hearts out was actually dealing with depression in real life. Jim’s long struggle with mental health had allegedly put pressure on his relationship with Womer. In an interaction with the Daily Mail, Womer revealed dealing with Carrey's mental health issues throughout their marriage, calling him an ‘extremely depressive person’. She recalled consoling him in the wee hours of the night.

When Womer divorced Carrey, he was one of the most popular celebrities in America. Jim initially settled the divorce with a USD 500,000 one-time payment and USD 25,000 per month in additional support. However, after the divorce, the amount was lowered to USD 10,000 per month. According to Rolling Stone, Womer claims she and Jim separated in November 1993, while Jim claims they parted ways on June 15, 1993.
Jim reportedly signed a USD 450,000 contract for The Mask on June 15, and California's divorce laws stated that he would split the money with Womer if they were still together on the date the contract was signed. Later, it was also revealed that Womer demanded between USD 10 million and USD 20 million to settle the divorce. The ex-couple’s divorce settlement once again grabbed the headlines after Womer revealed that USD 10,000 per month in child support was not enough to fund their daughter’s expenses and the lavish lifestyle. However, the former partners eventually settled the matter in private.
