Their on-screen chemistry was so good that it left people with goosebumps, secretly wishing the duo would date in real life. Well, the shipping worked, as Nina and Ian also started dating in real life. Reportedly, Nina and Ian started dating in 2010, and throughout their relationship, they left people in awe with their chemistry, which was reflected in their on-screen characters.

Talking about her breakup with Ian, Nina once told E! News that they didn't part ways because anything happened. She also shared that they had always been friends, and the care and love remained, despite their professional roles. Nina said:

"I've said this before, that we didn't break up because anything bad happened or because there wasn't love or friendship. I love him and the friendship is still strong and I think he's great and I care about him. And that didn't change. Yes, we're professional and that's fine. We were friends long before we dated and we still are now."

Nina told Seventeen Magazine that her goal was never to date a co-star, as she wanted to keep it professional. She tried to avoid it, but sometimes people can't help forming a connection. Charlie Holt, one of the actresses of TVD, told US Weekly that after Ian and Nina broke up, they remained thoroughly professional, and they managed it pretty well. She said:

"It never got weird, like, props to them. They did a great job at managing that. But it's hard. Like for a lot people, it's really tough."

Was there any cheating angle between Nina Dobrev and Ian Somerhalder? 

After breaking up with Nina Dobrev, Ian Somerhalder found solace in the arms of Nikki Reed, who was speculated to be a friend of the former. "When I heard about the wedding, I thought it was beautiful. They look happy and I am happy and so I don't see why there should be a problem with that. The drama is in the media, it's not with us. But of course, we're on a teen drama show, everyone's going to look for drama. If there's no drama, there's nothing to write about. I just ignore it."
