In a piece of heartbreaking news, famous musician and teacher, Ustad Puran Shah Koti, passed away at the age of 72. He was suffering from a long-term illness and, for the past few months, he had not been keeping well. Ustad Puran Shah Koti, was known for his vast knowledge in subjects like society, politics, music, and literature. Ustad Puran Shah Koti was always up to date on what was happening around the world. He was known as a great teacher and an exceptional presenter.
Ustad Puran Shah Koti's personality was deeply impactful, and his intellect was remarkably high. According to Deepak Bali, who is the Advisor, Culture and Tourism to the Government of Punjab, late Ustad Puran Shah Koti could speak effortlessly on any subject, be it society, politics, music, or literature.

The report stated that when Ustad Puran Shah Koti moved to Shahkot in Jalandhar, he took shelter in a small hut. There, he had taught music to Hans Raj Hans, Jasbir Jassi, and Sabar Koti, to name a few. Ustad Puran Shah Koti once, on his Facebook page, had also shared a snap with Hans Raj Hans. The picture showcased the deep bond between Hans Raj Hans and Ustad Puran Shah Koti.

Ustad Puran Shah Koti was known for his communication skills and could connect with the audience. According to Deepak, Ustad Puran Shah Koti had revealed that singing was god's gift to him. He had credited his father, Ranjan Das, who taught him to sing. Ustad Puran Shah Koti further trained under Waqir Hussain 'Sahab' of Patiala. He credited his wife for supporting him when they had nothing to eat and had no shelter.

Master Saleem, known as Saleem Shehzada, is the son of Ustad Puran Shah Koti. The late singer was known for singing Sufi music and had also mentored his son, Master Saleem. He is one of the most well-known and famous voices in Punjab. His dedication to the Punjabi culture and Sufi traditions left a big mark on the Punjabi music industry. Ustad Puran Shah Koti used to always say that singing can never stop- even if he remains silent, music will continue. Ustad Puran Shah Koti's contributions to Indian music and culture will continue to inspire future generations. According to the report, the late singer had no knowledge of any technical singing method. He used to call himself a nomadic singer.

Deepak Bali, the Advisor, Culture and Tourism to the Government of Punjab, shared an anecdote with The Tribune. Ustad Puran Shah Koti was totally dedicated to music, and once he had to undergo surgery. The doctors had advised him not to sing. However, the late singer, despite not being allowed to sing, used to sing under a blanket in his bed. Ustad Puran Shah Koti had shared:
"I wish what we have learned from our forefathers could live forever because singing is eternal. I want to sing in the same way as I have sung my whole life. I have no interest in money and I don't want any awards. But my only aim is to make the upcoming generation aware of Sufism, classical music, heritage, culture, food and singing."

Ustad Puran Shah Koti's son, Master Saleem, a while back, took to his Instagram Stories to reveal that a prayer meeting has been arranged in remembrance of Ustad Puran Shah Koti. It will take place on December 23, 2025, at 13 KP Nagar, near Deol Nagar, backside of Durga Shakti Mandir, Nakodar Road, Jalandhar. A wave of grief has swept through Punjabi music lovers.
