Former Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina, is leading all the headlines as she is sentenced to death by Bangladesh's International Crimes Tribunal over alleged crimes against humanity. After a month-long trial, the court found Hasina guilty of ordering a crackdown on a student-led uprising.
Hasina was also accused of making inflammatory remarks and directing the use of deadly weapons against students, who led a mass uprising, forcing her out of office. Amid the unrest, Hasina fled Bangladesh in August 2024 and has been residing in India since then. Amid the former Bangladesh Prime Minister, Hasina’s sentence, let us read on to know more about her husband, Dr M. A. Wazed Miah.

Born on February 16, 1942, in Pirganj, Rangpur, Wazed Miah was lovingly known as ‘Sudha Miah’. After completing his education in Rangpur, Wazed Miah did his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Physics and topped in both. He later earned a diploma from Imperial College London and a PhD in physics from Durham University, UK.

In 1963, Miah was employed by the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission. After his associateship at the International Centre for Theoretical Physics in Italy, Miah returned to Pakistan. Soon, he was the chief scientist at the Karachi Nuclear Power Plant. However, his contract was terminated after his security clearance was revoked, and he was then migrated to Bangladesh.

After returning to Bangladesh, Miah joined the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission and made significant contributions. Miah was a very influential figure in the field of science. Throughout his career, he published several influential books, which included Fundamentals of Electromagnetics and Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibke Ghire Kichhu Ghatana O Bangladesh. Miah later became the chairman of the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission and retired in 1999.

During his time at Dhaka University, Wazed Miah stayed active in politics. From 1961 to 1962, he was the vice-president of the Fazlul Huq Muslim Hall. He was also arrested for taking part in the 1962 East Pakistan Education movement. Despite being so active in politics during his college years, he stayed out of politics after university.

Sheikh Hasina is the daughter of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the founding father and first president of Bangladesh. Hasina got married to Wazed Miah on November 17, 1967. The wedding was an intimate affair due to the adverse political circumstances in Bangladesh. At the time of their wedding, Hasina’s father, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, was in jail and blessed the couple from the jail gate. He gifted his son-in-law, Wazed, a Rolex wristwatch, which Wazed kept as a treasured possession for the rest of his life.
The couple were blessed with two kids, a son, Sajeeb Wazed and a daughter, Saima Wazed. Despite being married into a political family, Wazed stayed humble. He never boasted of being Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s son-in-law or Sheikh Hasina’s husband. As a nuclear scientist with an international reputation, Wazed made people proud with his intelligence.

In 2009, Wazed Miah bid the world adieu at the age of 66. He was suffering from problems with his heart, as well as renal failure, diabetes, asthma, and high blood pressure. He had a bypass surgery and an angioplasty a few months before his death. Miah was regarded as the ever-shining lighthouse, and his work has been an inspiration.
