Iconic singer, Selena Quintanilla, was widely known for performing Tejano music. She not only grabbed attention for her music but also for her fashion choices. Media outlets often addressed Selena as Tejano Madonna. She was one of the most celebrated singers of the late 20th century. She rose to fame after winning the Tejano Music Award for Female Vocalist. She won her first Grammy Award for her single, Como la Flor in 1994. However, her life was cut short in 1995.
Selena was murdered by the head of her fan club, Yolanda Saldivar, on March 31, 1995. Apart from her professional front, Selena had always garnered the spotlight for her personal life. In April 1992, Selena eloped with the man of her dreams, Chris Perez, as her father was against their relationship. Even today, after so many years have passed, Chris deeply misses Selena. On her 31st death anniversary, Chris expressed his gratitude to those who have been pushing Selena’s legacy forward. Selena was born on April 16, 1971, in Lake Jackson, Texas, to Abraham and Marcela Quintanilla. Along with her two siblings, Abraham III (A.B.) and Suzette, Selena grew up in Corpus Christi, Texas. When Selena and her siblings were older enough, their dad formed a family band with Selena on lead vocals, Suzette on the drums and A.B. on the keyboard. To honour their dad’s contribution to music, the trio named the new band, Selena y Los Dinos. Soon, the band gained popularity in South Texas, and Selena earned the nickname, 'The Queen of Tejano Music'.

Chris and Selena crossed paths for the first time when the former joined the latter’s band, Selena y Los Dinos. Chris auditioned for Selena’s band in 1990 and was hired by Selena’s brother, A.B Quintanilla. The duo kept their relationship professional in the early days after Chris joined the band. However, love blossomed when the band took a trip to Mexico. They kept their relationship a secret, knowing that Selena’s father, Abraham, would not approve. However, when Selena’s father found out about their relationship, he kicked Chris out of the band.

On April 2, 1992, Chris and Selena eloped and got married. On what would have been their 25th marriage anniversary in 2017, Chris wrote a heartfelt note on his Facebook account. In the note, Chris mentioned that when they tied the knot, Selena was 20 and he was 22. Recounting the memories, Chris wrote:

"It's hard to believe that today marks 25 years since Selena and I decided that the only way to be together...was to run away and get married at 20 and 22 years old in secret. What a rollercoaster ride that day was."
Selena was murdered by Yolanda Saldivar. For the unversed, Yolanda is a former nurse. She attended one of Selena’s concerts and pitched the idea to start a fan club to Selena’s father. She and Selena met in June 1991 when she became the founder and acting president of the fan club in San Antonio. Reportedly, Yolanda was responsible for membership and fundraising. However, on March 2, 1995, the iconic singer and her family accused Yolanda of embezzling money from the singer's businesses. Following this, Yolanda was fired from her work. After Yolanda was fired, she purchased a .38-calibre revolver and arranged to meet Selena at a Days Inn motel in Corpus Christi, Texas.

During a heated exchange, Yolanda shot Selena. While Selena tried to save herself, she succumbed to her serious injury and died at 1:05 p.m. on March 31, 1995. According to multiple reports, the bullet had hit Selena’s artery. Selena was just 23 when she died outside the Days Inn motel in Corpus Christi. Before tragically passing away, Selena revealed her killer’s name. At the time, she was screaming and asked for help. Before collapsing in the lobby, Selena yelled at the staff to lock the door. According to a report by People, Selena’s last words were:
"Help me! Help me! I've been shot! Lock the door! She'll shoot me again! Yolanda ... 158."
On March 31, 2026, Chris wrote a heartfelt note on his wife, Selena Quintanilla’s 31st death anniversary. He mentioned that, along with all the melancholy emotions, it’s amazing to see what Selena’s legacy has become. He expressed his gratitude to those who have been taking her legacy forward. He wrote on his Instagram handle:
"This day, this time of year…is always difficult for those of us who loved her. But, what an amazing thing it is to see what her legacy has become. Just want to say that, along with all the melancholy emotions that are present…there is also a feeling of gratitude. I know, it’s crazy. I know, you feel it too. But I am grateful that you guys continue to push Selena’s legacy forward…and you do it loud and proud! Let’s all keep it up…for her. Her memory and legacy deserve to be remembered for generations to come."
