The release of Ryan Murphy's Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette has once again brought the spotlight on America's unofficial prince and his wife, Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy. However, there was one more lesser-known figure who lost her life in the incident, Lauren Bessette, Carolyn's older sister. Although the fame of the Kennedys overshadowed the tragedy, Lauren died along with them as the flight crashed in the Atlantic Ocean on July 16, 1999, leaving a lasting mark on the country's history.

Lauren Bessette was far more than just Carolyn Bessette's sister and a lesser-known victim of the tragedy. She and her twin sister, Lisa, were born on November 5, 1964, in White Plains, New York. Lauren grew up in Greenwich, Connecticut, alongside her twin sister, Lisa, and her younger sister, Carolyn. She was a bright kid whose academic excellence led her to Hobart and William Smith Colleges, where she majored in economics. According to The Observer, her professors remembered her as a fearless student who stood out in a male-dominated academic environment.
After graduating, Lauren built a successful career in finance. She began working at the prestigious investment bank Morgan Stanley and relocated to Hong Kong for her job. Lauren spent several years there managing capital markets transactions. During the course, she became fluent in Mandarin and was promoted to vice president in 1996. Soon, she had to return to New York and rose to the role of principal, just a level below managing director.

Despite her professional success, Lauren maintained a deeply personal and grounded life. She lived in a Manhattan loft close to Carolyn and John F. Kennedy Jr. Lauren, and the two shared a close bond; their friends and colleagues often described it as unbreakable. According to Town & Country, insiders close to them recalled how they were each other's confidantes, frequently spending time together. Lauren was rumoured to be dating JFK Jr.'s first cousin, Bobby Shriver, Maria Shriver's brother. Describing Lauren and Carolyn's bond, her colleague said:
"Every time I saw them together, it was just smiles and laughter and sometimes serious conversation. You could really tell that they were each other's confidantes in that regard."

Lauren joined Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy and John F. Kennedy on the ill-fated flight in July 1999 as they were going to Martha's Vineyard, where she intended to visit friends. However, the journey ended in tragedy. According to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), the crash was caused by pilot error resulting from spatial disorientation. For those unaware, JFK Jr was flying at night over open water. Investigators also found that poor visibility, haze, and JFL Jr's lack of full instrument flight certification contributed to the accident.
The 1999 plane crash is recalled as a tragedy for the Kennedys, but the 34-year-old Lauren's life tells its own story about intelligence, independence, and deep familial love.
