The 21-year-old underwent surgery on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, to improve his chances of recovery. However, he tragically passed away only two days later, leaving the football community in shock. The heartbreaking news of Billy’s death was confirmed by Chichester City in a statement:
"After sustaining a significant brain injury last Saturday, Billy Vigar was put in an induced coma. On Tuesday, he needed an operation to aid any chances of recovery. Although this helped, the injury proved too much for him and he passed away on Thursday (25th) morning. The responses to the original update show how much Billy was thought of and loved within the sport. His family are devastated that this has happened whilst he was playing the sport that he loved."
Billy Vigar, born October 22, 2003, began his football journey with Arsenal, joining the academy at 14 after leaving Hove Rivervale FC. Scouts impressed. His debut season was remarkable, having scored 17 goals at Hale End. In 2022, he earned his professional contract.
Vigar went on to play for Arsenal’s Under-21 matches, making appearances in the PL2 and EFL Trophy, and even enjoying loan spells at Derby County and Eastbourne Borough and at the end of the 2023/24 season.
Before signing for Chistester City in August 2025, the young striker played for Hastings United. He was widely praised for his commitment to the game and versatility to contribute in multiple positions on the field.
Billy Vigar’s death at the prime of his life has left the football community devastated. Clubs across the country, including Derby County and Hastings United, have expressed their grief at the loss of a young talent. His former academy, Arsenal, wrote:
"Everyone at Arsenal is devastated by the shocking news that former academy graduate Billy Vigar has passed away. All our thoughts are with his family and loved ones at this time."
In light of Vigar’s tragic demise, Chichester City confirmed that the club’s upcoming match against Lewes FC has been postponed as the team and fans mourn the untimely loss of their teammate. The Isthmian League Premier Division will reportedly hold a minute of silence before all games this weekend, with players wearing black armbands in Vigar’s honour.
Mourning fans are devastated and reeling at Billy Vigar’s tragic football incident, with many insisting that the incident could have been prevented. Supporters are now calling for stricter safety measures, urging the removal of concrete walls around pitches. One user wrote on social media:
“It's absolutely awful for a 21-year-old to go and play the game he loves on a Saturday and lose his life. These grounds should have walls taken down or padding put on them. It's a tragic accident that was avoidable. RIP, young man.”
A petition on Change.org has quickly gained more than 1,000 signatures following Chichester City’s announcement of Billy’s death. The petition for ‘Vigar’s Law’ reads:
“We, football lovers, urgently call for the removal of brick walls and other hard, immovable structures surrounding football pitches.”
Vigar’s career, although short, reflected a dedication to football that also inspired those around him. Wishing his family and friends strength in this difficult time.
