When Volume 1 of the season was released with four explosive episodes, viewers were surprised to see 'Will' come into the spotlight like never before.

He was always known as a quiet, artistic kid whose disappearance led to the events of Season 1. Now, towards Season 5, he has become a key figure in the final battle. Especially in the final Episode, 4, he brought him into the spotlight thanks to an unexpected twist.

The biggest shock in Stranger Things 5 was when 'Will Byers', played by Noah Schnapp, uses his supernatural powers similar to 'Eleven' portrayed by Millie Bobby Brown to kill Demogorgons during a significant fight. Viewers were immediately curious to know how 'Will,' who never showed any telekinetic abilities, could bring out such destructive force. According to series creators, Matt and Ross Duffer, the secret behind the powers lies in 'Will's long connection to the Upside Down. During an interview with Variety, Ross explained that 'Will's new abilities are not his own powers, but an extension of 'Venca's. In his words:

"It's different in that he's able to channel Vecna's powers."

Ross shared that 'Will' uses them almost like 'Puppeteering'. Whereas Matt Duffer further clarified that 'Will' can manipulate anything connected to the hive mind, which is why he can destroy creatures like Demogorgons but cannot move physical objects like 'Eleven'. Matt explained, "He can't open a door, because the door is not part of the hive mind." When he was asked if 'Will' always had this power within him, Matt denied it. He accepted that 'Will' only gained access to it because he was taken to Upside Down in 1983. Instead, he got it because he got 'hooked' into the hive mind, clarifying the trauma of Season 1, leaving a permanent supernatural imprint on him.

This twist did not appear randomly in Season 5. The Duffers revealed they had always planned for 'Will' to have a larger arc tied to his psychic connection. Ross shared that 'Will' had a 'dark version' of it in Season 2, when he was possessed by the 'Mind Flayer' and could see through its eyes. At that time, 'Will' did not understand this link or how it could be used against 'Venca'. Consequently, Season 5 marks the first time 'Will' learns to use this connection as a weapon rather than suffering from it. In their words:

'Will Byers's journey has been one of the most emotional across all five seasons. It all began in 1983 when he was taken to Upside Down and became the first human host of the hive mind. Even after 'Eleven' closed the gate, 'Will' continued to feel 'Venca's presence, something he told 'Mike' after coming back to Hawkins in Season 4.
