Spike Lee knows exactly how he wants to be remembered. The Oscar-winning filmmaker, 68, recently expressed the same at the Critics' Choice Association’s 8th Celebration of Black Cinema & Television, hosted at LA’s Fairmont Century Plaza on December 9, 2025. After decades of a glorious filmmaking career, Lee said his legacy ultimately comes down to two things: his films and his students.
As Spike Lee accepted the Career Achievement Award honoring his decades-long impact on cinema, his loudest supporter was close by: Tonya Lewis Lee, his wife and partner of more than 30 years. Together, Spike and Tonya have built one of Hollywood’s most enduring marriages, weathering industry pressures and personal challenges while consistently standing by each other’s side.

In a recent interview with PEOPLE, Spike Lee talked about the legacy he would leave behind when he dies. The Academy Award winner, who has long been a professor of film studies and directing at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, didn’t hesitate when he said he knew it would be his legacy in films and teaching. The BlacKkKlansman director said:
“It’s two things: it’s the films, and also I’m a teacher. So my students … a lot of them have gone and made careers in it… I’ve been teaching 31 years.”

But behind the films and the classroom, there is another constant presence shaping that legacy. For more than three decades, Tonya Lewis Lee has been Spike’s closest partner and steady support system. In an era defined by high-profile breakups, the two have remained a steady presence in each other's lives, consistently bringing out one another’s creativity.

They say, “When you know, you know”. And that’s exactly how the School Daze director’s relationship with his wife began. Spike and Tonya first met in September 1992 in Washington, D.C., at the Congressional Black Caucus Dinner. Among the thousands of guests who attended the event, it was Tonya who caught the filmmaker’s eye, and he apparently wasted no time and made his move. Speaking to Essence, Tonya once recalled their first meeting with a laugh:

“We walked past each other. Spike circled back around and proceeded to give me the third degree. 'Are you an actress? A model? A singer? Who are you here with? What do you do? Do you have a boyfriend?'”
What followed was an enduring saga of companionship. Something clicked that day, and within weeks, Tonya and Spike made their public appearance together. In November 1992, camera lenses captured the two at the premiere of Lee’s directorial and production, Malcolm X. Less than a year later, they were married.

Spike and Tonya Lee tied the knot on October 2, 1993, in New York City. Their church wedding followed a grand reception at the American Museum of Natural History, attended by Hollywood’s stalwarts. Pop legend Stevie Wonder had performed during the ceremony, as reported.
Unlike most other celebrity spouses, Tonya initially had no connection to Hollywood. Though she is now a well-established producer, writer, and entrepreneur, she was on a rather different route early on in her career.

Born on March 30, 1966, in Yonkers, New York, Tonya earned a degree in the liberal arts from Sarah Lawrence College before pursuing a career in law at the University of Virginia School of Law. After graduating with her J.D. (Juris Doctor) in 1991, she practiced law as an attorney in Washington, D.C., with a focus on corporate and First Amendment Law.

Even as an attorney, Tonya’s heart wanted a career in the creative world. In a June 2019 interview with Coveteur, the writer-producer shared that she had long dreamed of a career in television, but, with her parents’ advice, she decided to pursue higher education and build a stable foundation before taking creative risks. Tonya told the outlet:
“I really wanted to go into television as I was graduating from college, but I didn’t know how to do that. My parents, smartly, were like, ‘You need to make sure you’ve got something to fall back on.’”
Today, Tonya is a well-known producer whose name is associated with some notable projects. In 1998, she co-founded a production banner, Madstone Company Inc., under which she produced projects like The Watsons Go to Birmingham (2013) and Aftershock (2022). She has also worked with Nickelodeon and co-authored children’s books with Spike Lee.
While the Oscar-winning filmmaker is rightfully a more recognizable name, Tonya has long been a creative equal in their marriage. The couple not only shares their passion for creativity and art but also enhances each other’s contributions. Speaking about their creative pursuits, Tonya once told Ebony:
“We are really lucky to be working in the same fields and to also have different mindsets and provide different points of view for each other. Every now and then, I consult him, and I know he’ll always be really honest with me."

Their dynamic led to real contributions in the creative domain. In 2014, Tonya and her business partner, Nikki Siver, launched ToniK Productions, the banner that would help bring one of Spike’s most iconic films back to life. Lee’s 1986 film, She’s Gotta Have It, returned with a Netflix series adaptation under this production.
Besides being an executive producer in several of Spike’s projects, Tonya co-authored three children’s books with him, including Please, Baby, Please (2002), Please, Puppy, Please (2005), and Giant Steps to Change the World (2011).
Spike and Tonya are proud parents of two children, a daughter, Satchel Lee, and a son, Jackson Lee. Just like their parents, the Lee siblings are also deeply rooted in the arts and pursued their respective careers in the industry. Satchel is a multimedia artist and filmmaker who studied at NYU Tisch and later earned an MFA in photography. Today, she is a renowned photographer who has exhibited internationally and even photographed the Do the Right Thing filmmaker for The Washington Post Magazine.
On the other hand, Jackson followed his father’s footsteps into directing. In 2020, he made his directorial debut with the short film Thompson Firm. Reflecting on his children, Spike told Vulture in 2012:
"I know they are going to be the best legacy that my wife, Tonya, and I leave behind.”
Today, the former attorney’s influence extends far beyond Hollywood. The 59-year-old remains active in film production and writing, while also running her very own wellness brand, Movita Organics. One of her notable productions includes the 2022 Hulu documentary Aftershock, which earned her a Peabody Award that same year. The short film examines the devastating realities of maternal mortality in the U.S., particularly among Black women.
After more than three decades of marriage, Spike Lee and Tonya Lewis Lee remain each other’s harshest critics and strongest supporters. And while Spike’s films may shape how history remembers him, Tonya’s work ensures that their legacy extends far beyond the screen.
In this age of short-lived romances, Tonya and Spike Lee prove that the most enduring partnerships are often not the loudest, but the most lasting.
