Sanjiv Goenka, the chairman of the conglomerate RP-Sanjiv Goenka Group, is one of the richest businessmen in India. The RPSG group, headquartered in Kolkata, has diverse interests in sectors like power, retail, FMCG, infrastructure, sports, and media. Sanjiv Goenka was born to Marwari parents, Rama Prasad Goenka and Sushila Devi Goenka, and raised in Kolkata. He completed his B. Com degree from St. Xaviers College in 1981. After the Goenka family’s business split in 2011, Sanjiv started managing the RPSG, and his brother, Harsh Goenka helmed the RPG group.

A report by Forbes stated that Sanjiv Goenka’s net worth is USD 3.4 billion, which is INR 28,390 crore, making him the 84th richest person in India in 2023. He is also the 949th among the world’s billionaires. Meanwhile, Sanjiv Goenka’s RPSG group generated a revenue of approximately Rs. 32,000 crore in 2023. In addition to the RPSG group, his other assets include the supermarket chain, Spencers and the snacks brand, Too Yumm! Sanjiv Goenka reportedly owns a lavish bungalow in Delhi’s prestigious and poshest Lutyens Zone, among his other luxurious properties.
Apart from being a visionary businessman, Sanjiv Goenka is also hailed for his leadership and philanthropic roles. The 63-year-old has reportedly served as the chairman of the board of governors at IIT-Kharagpur and has been actively involved with IIT-Gandhinagar. Sanjiv Goenka also held the distinction of being the youngest president of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and the Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC).

The Indian business tycoon also owns cricket and football teams. Sanjiv Goenka owns a major stake in the Indian Super League (ISL) team Atletico de Kolkata (ATK). Meanwhile, the RPSG chairman previously owned the two-season Indian Premier League franchise, Rising Pune Supergiant, which played in the league’s 2016 and 2017 editions. In 2021, Sanjiv Goenka paid close to a billion dollars for the new IPL franchise, Lucknow Super Giants, who started playing in the league in 2022.

On May 8, 2024, Sanjiv Goenka’s team, Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), lost against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) by 10 wickets in the ongoing Indian Premier League. After their harrowing defeat against SRH, the owner of LSG lashed out at the team’s captain, KL Rahul. In the viral videos, Sanjiv Goenka looked furious as he conversed with LSG’s skipper, while the latter listened to the businessman helplessly. People, including the sports fraternity, have called out the owner’s behaviour on the field and have said that they should have the conversation behind closed doors.

Speaking of his personal life, the 63-year-old business tycoon is married to Preeti Goenka, who is a renowned interior designer. The couple has two children, a son, Shashwat and a daughter, Avarna. Sanjiv Goenka’s son serves as the vice chairman of the RPSG group and the young businessman got married to Shivika Jhunjhnuwala in a lavish wedding ceremony held in Kolkata back in 2016. The wedding was held in ITC Sonar Bangla over three days, and some of the renowned people from all works of life were present to bless the newlyweds.
Meanwhile, his daughter, Avarna Jain is the chairperson of RPSG Lifestyle Media. According to India Today, she also acts as the vice chairperson of the music label, Saregama. Avarna helped the 100-year-old music label to enter the digital realm. Recently, Sanjiv Goenka's daughter's RPSG Lifestyle Media announced the launch of The Hollywood Reporter India and also the popular American men's magazine, Esquire in India. The businesswoman is married to Devansh Jain of Inox Group.
