Popular singer, Kalpana Raghavendar recently garnered a lot of attention after the news of her suicide attempt made headlines. In a tragic turn of events, Kalpana was found unconscious at her residence in Nizampet, Hyderabad. As per multiple reports, the celebrated singer consumed sleeping pills.

Kalpana is currently on the ventilator support, but her condition is said to be stable as of now. Who is Kalpana Raghavendar?

Kalpana Raghavendar is one of the prominent singers of South Indian cinema and has sung many Tamil and Telugu songs. She comes from a family of singers as her father, T. S. Raghavendra, was a playback singer, composer and actor. On the other hand, her mother, Sulochana, is also a popular singer and Kalpana’s sister, Shekinah Shawn is an opera singer.

Kalpana Raghavendar started singing at the age of 5

Kalpana Raghavendar is known for her effortlessly singing and high baritone. She took Carnatic music lessons from Madurai T. Srinivasan and started singing at the age of five. She also acted along Kamal Haasan in the film, Punnagai Mannan at the mere age of six. Kalpana made her playback singing debut in 1999 with Mangala Gouriki from Manoharam.

By the age of 33, Kalpana recorded 1500 tracks and performed in 3000 shows. Over the course of her career, Kalpana has worked with legendary music composers and singers like M.S. Viswanathan, Ilaiyaraaja, A.R. Rahman, K.V. Mahadevan, S.P. Balasubrahmanyam and many others. 

Kalpana Raghavendar won the singing reality show, Star Singer Malayalam

Kalpana Raghavendar’s stint with TV goes back to 2010, when she won the singing reality show, Star Singer Malayalam season 5. She also participated in Bigg Boss Telugu Season 1. Apart from singing and live shows, Kalpana is a judge on Super Singer Junior.

Kalpana has enchanted people with her soulful tracks in multiple languages. Some of her top tracks include Poda Poda Punnaku, Premante Suluvu Kadhura, Joole Joole, Dikkulu Choodaku and Pogiren, among others. In addition to her musical achievements, Kalpana holds a Master's degree in Computer Applications.

What happened to Kalpana Raghavendar?

It so happened that when Kalpana Raghavendar was not seen outside her home for two days, the security staff alerted the residence. Concerned residents called her, but when the calls were left unanswered, it raised the alarm, and authorities alerted the police on March 2, 2025.

As the house was locked from inside, the police entered through the kitchen and found Kalpana lying unconscious on the bed, with all the lights turned off. The singer was rushed to the Holistic hospital, where it was reported that she had consumed sleeping pills.

Though she has been put on the ventilator, Kalpana’s condition is cited to be stable now. When the incident happened, Kalpana’s husband, Prabhakar was in Chennai and rushed to Hyderabad after knowing about Kalpana’s suicide attempt.

As per the police officials from KPHB Police Station, doctors confirmed that Kalpana had ingested sleeping pills. The officials stated that though her condition is stable but the reason behind her suicide attempt is still unclear and further details will be available once she regains consciousness. The investigation is still going on. The police also took Kalpana’s husband, Prabhakar to their Hyderabad home for questioning.

Kalpana Raghavendar’s suicide attempt has come as a shocker for her fans, who are praying for her speedy recovery.
