US civil rights icon, Cesar Chavez's saintly image was tainted with some shocking allegations of child abuse and serial rape. The New York Times' bombshell investigation uncovered allegations against the American labour icon on March 18, 2026 (ET). The revelation came two decades after his demise, and at the centre of the report is the 96-year-old, Dolores Huerta, one of the most influential labour activists of the 20th century.
Dolores made headlines for breaking a 60-year silence, and accusing Cesar Chavez of manipulating and raping her and revealed for the first time that he fathered two of her children through "forced" encounters. So, as the news creates buzz online, let's take a quick look at who Cesae was and the secrets surrounding his career.

Starting in the 1950s, Cesar Chavez largely organised Latino farmworkers in California, leading strikes and boycotts. These initiatives forced changes in wages and working conditions while also earning him national recognition and, over time, the status of an icon. He was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by Bill Clinton. Years later, Joe Biden placed a bust of Cesar in the Oval Office. California marks March 31 as Cesar Chavez Day. Cesar died in 1993, aged 66, of natural causes.

Dolores Huerta is a civil rights icon herself and the co-founder of the United Farm Workers (UFW). In an interview, Dolores revealed that Cesar had manipulated her to have sex with him in one instance and raped her in his car in another. She made a shocking revelation during the chat and revealed that the instance resulted in pregnancies on both occasions. She said she stayed silent for decades because she feared what speaking out might do to the movement she had spent her life building. In a statement on Medium on March 18, 2026 (ET), Dolores revealed:
"I am nearly 96 years old, and for the last 60 years have kept a secret because I believed that exposing the truth would hurt the farmworker movement I have spent my entire life fighting for. I have encouraged people to always use their voice. Following the New York Times’ multi-year investigation into sexual misconduct by Cesar Chavez, I can no longer stay silent and must share my own experiences."

Dolores Huerta described two encounters in the 1960s. She revealed that during the first encounter, she couldn't resist him due to the pressure on her. However, the second incident was wholly forced. She was quoted as saying:

"The first time I was manipulated and pressured into having sex with him, and I didn’t feel I could say no because he was someone that I admired, my boss and the leader of the movement I had already devoted years of my life to. The second time, I was forced, against my will, and in an environment where I felt trapped."
She also revealed that both of the sexual encounters with Cesar Chavez resulted in pregnancies. She added that she concealed them and arranged for the children to be raised by other families. The United Farm Workers (UFW) co-founder later shared that she eventually developed a "deep relationship" with the two children born out of abuse. She was quoted as saying:
"But even then, no one knew the full truth about how they were conceived until just a few weeks ago."

Two other women, daughters of members of the United Farm Workers, told the newspaper they were abused as minors in the 1970s. Ana Murguia said Cesar Chavez began touching her inappropriately when she was 12. Debra Rojas also accused the late US civil icon, claiming that she was abused when she was only 13 and had sexual intercourse at 15, which under California law constitutes rape.
