The U.S. Army's mission to find its F-15 pilot whose aircraft went down in Iran had made global headlines. But after the successful rescue, the incident became a controversy when President Donald Trump himself claimed that a critical "leak" occurred during the mission. While questions have surfaced about the identity of the alleged leaker, one person, Amit Segal, has come under scrutiny. But why? Let's understand the reason behind it.

Amit Segal is one of Israel's most prominent journalists and political commentators. He was born in 1982 to a journalist and an ex-member of Jewish Underground, Hagai Segal. Now, he is working as a Chief Political analyst for Channel 12 News and contributes columns for one of his country's leading newspapers, Yedioth Ahronoth. Amit is famous for his deep access to political circles, and he has broken major stories in the past, offering his audiences insight into government affairs.
Gradually, Amit Segal has established himself as a highly influential voice in Israeli media. According to the reports, he shares a close bond with Israel's Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu. In fact, some old reports suggest that the Prime Minister offered him a potential ministerial role in 2022, which has now fueled discussions about his close connections to those in power. However, Amit Segal has found himself in a controversy after he was allegedly linked to a possible information leak during the U.S.'s high-profile military operation in Iran to resume their F-15 pilot.

Amit has been linked to the incident because social media users pointed out that he was among the first journalists to share details about the missing U.S. pilot. For those unaware, two F-15 crew members reportedly went down in Iran. One was immediately rescued, but the other was missing for a few hours, making him a suspect in Iran. Subsequently, while the U.S. was making efforts to rescue the pilot, sensitive information about just one pilot's rescue went viral. Moreover, it added more complications to the mission, putting the lives of multiple American soldiers involved in the operation at risk.

President Donald Trump delivered an address to the nation on April 6, 2026, in which he strongly criticised the alleged leak. He called it a threat to their national security and said they were working to identify the person responsible. President Trump acknowledged how the situation became critical after the information leak, which also led Iran to announce rewards for anyone who would capture the airman. However, he did not name or confirm the involvement of any specific person in the matter. In his words:
"It became a much more difficult operation because a leaker leaked that we have one, we've rescued one, but there's another one out there that we're trying to get. So, actually, the country of Iran put out a major notice offering a very big award for anybody who captures the pilot. So in addition to a hostile, very talented, very good, very evil military, we had millions of people trying to get an award, so we have to find that leaker, because that's a sick person."
Despite the absence of official confirmation, internet users and online discussions have quickly named Amit Segal in the matter, especially given his early reporting. Some observers pointed out that Amit himself had claimed he was the first to provide the information and shared that some alleged "Western Sources" had given him the update, which they alleged could be the possible link referenced by Donald Trump. However, when his name frequently surfaced in the matter, Amit maintained a cautious stance. Sharing his response, he said:
"I'm not sure I was the first. And anyway, I will protect my sources.
What do you think about Amit Segal's name coming into spotlight amid the search by U.S. for potential leaker of their pilot rescue mission in Iran?
