Just days after the fatal shooting of Renee Good in Minneapolis during a federal operation, another death involving US Border authorities has left the city in shock. The incident occurred in the morning of Saturday on January 24, 2026, when a 37-year-old man was shot and killed by federal agents near the intersection of 26th Street and Nicollet Avenue. The incident took place amid what officials described as an immigration enforcement operation. As videos of the incident surfaced online, netizens were quick to identify the man involved in those crucial moments.
According to the netizens and the Star Tribune, the 37-year-old shot during the operation was Alex Jeffrey Pretti. He has been a resident of Minneapolis and a US citizen. According to the public records, he earned a nursing license in 2021, which remains active through March 2026. Meanwhile, his parents, who spoke to the Associated Press, revealed that Alex reportedly worked as an intensive care unit nurse.

Additionally, he had even served at the Department of Veterans Affairs, where he cared for critically ill veterans. According to his colleagues, including Dimitri Drekonja from the University of Minnesota, Alex was "a good, kind person who lived to help." Simultaneously, Alex Pretti's family mentioned that he was concerned about the federal immigration actions taking place in Minneapolis. Therefore, he was at the site of their other operation to observe and document it in videos.

According to other viral witness videos, Alex held a phone and moved toward a group on the sidewalk shortly before the confrontation began. In the video shared by independent outlets, he was tackled by multiple agents, who brought him to the ground. Later, a few minutes, several gunshots were heard in rapid succession. According to the Independent, approximately ten shots were fired within seconds.

According to the Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O'Hara, Alex Pretti was a lawful gun owner with a permit to carry in Minnesota. It was later confirmed that the police found a gun from the same event. However, there is a contrast in the precise sequence of events leading up to the shooting. According to the Star Tribune, Alex had no criminal record other than minor traffic citations. For those unaware, that officers were conducting a lawful federal operation and that Pretti posed a threat. The department also noted that Alex was carrying additional ammunition and did not have identification on him at the time. On the other hand, Minnesota's Governor, Tim Walz, publicly questioned the federal account and denied their version of the events. Further, he emphasized that viral videos showcasing the incident were crucial to them. In his words:
"Thank God we have video, because according to DHS, these seven heroic guys took on an onslaught of a battalion against them or something. It's nonsense, people. It's nonsense, and it is a lie."

Further, MSNBC's Alex Witt reported that neither DHS nor the FBI would investigate the shooting, which has received additional questions. Meanwhile, journalists and investigators have continued analyzing qviral videos from different angles to better understand what unfolded.
Rest in peace. Alex Jeffrey Pretti.
