John Abraham starrer The Diplomat is currently leading the headlines for its amazing portrayal of the real-life story of an Indian girl, Uzma Ahmed. The film, featured on the OTT giant Netflix, is receiving positive reviews. The film stars John Abraham helming the role of 'IFS officer JP Singh' along with Sadia, Sharib Hashmi, Revathy and a few others.
The story of The Diplomat revolves around Uzma, who was trapped in Pakistan and was married at gunpoint and how Indian diplomat to Islamabad, JP Singh and his colleagues, along with the then External Affairs Minister late Sushma Swaraj, helped her come out of Pakistan. But after watching The Diplomat, everyone has one question in their mind: where is Uzma Ahmed currently? Read on to learn more details about her.
Uzma Ahmed’s return to India on May 25, 2017, was televised across all channels, and since then, she has been christened as the ‘Daughter of India’. Uzma, who was once trapped in Pakistan, is currently running a beauty parlour with the name of Falak in lanes of Brahmpuri in northeast Delhi. Speaking to The Week, Uzma talked about her work and said:
“I am so busy with my work, I don’t have a second to worry about the future. Even when there are no customers. Between the parlour, looking after my daughter, the home and the kitchen, I don’t have any time. I tire myself out so completely with work that, once I enter my house, I can only eat, listen to some old songs and go to sleep.”
When producer, Rakesh Dang planned to make a biopic on Uzma’s life, she received an amount for the permission rights. With the money, she purchased a one-room house near Seelampur and a car. After coming from Pakistan, Uzma cut herself from the outer world and stayed in her room. But gradually, she lifted herself up and started working.
After the Pakistan episode, Uzma’s family members broke all ties with her, and she lives in Delhi alone with her daughter, Falak, from her previous marriage. Her daughter has thalassaemia, and she works hard for herself and her daughter. Despite the hard work, Uzma is content and happy and doesn’t need a man in her life, especially after all that she suffered in her two marriages.

Uzma was just 22 when she got married to a man, who fathered Falak. It was an arranged marriage, but it failed because of the abuses she suffered in it. After her failed first marriage, Uzma went to Malaysia to do a course in business management. It was there she met Tahir Ali through a friend, who was a taxi driver in Malaysia.
After falling in love with him, Uzma crossed the border to meet Tahir who lived in Buner, one of the remotest parts of northern Pakistan in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, on the Afghanistan border. After visiting Buner, she got to know that Tahir was already married with four kids. She was abducted, drugged and forced to marry Tahir at gunpoint. All her documents were confiscated, and she was held captive in a tiny room. She somehow managed to reach the Indian High Commission of Islamabad and with the help of JP Singh, she crossed the Wagah border safely and returned to India.
Just like Uzma Ahmed, there are hundreds of women, who get trapped across the border in the name of love. But everyone’s fate is not like Uzma. Some suffer silently, others lead a life of slavery.
