'Can I Get My Girlfriend In Here?' When Virat Kohli Wanted His Then-GF, Anushka On Australia Tour

Virat Kohli and Anushka Sharma’s love for each other, even after a decade of togetherness, is something which often grabs the limelight. The duo stays by each other’s sides through thick and thin, and Anushka is Kohli’s biggest cheerleader. Their relationship is a perfect blend of romance and respect, and the ace cricketer has never shied away from acknowledging Anushka’s role in his life.

On March 9, 2025, after India’s glorious win against New Zealand in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, the cricketing world witnessed yet another heart-melting moment when Virat came running to the stands to hug his wife. But did you know, even before their marriage, the cricketer could not imagine playing big matches without his support system in the stands?

Ravi Shastri recalls the time Virat Kohli requested to bring his then-girlfriend, Anushka Sharma, to the Australia tour

During a lively chat with Fox Cricket, Ravi Shastri reminisced about his days as Team India’s Director of Cricket on the 2014-15 Australia Tour. The former coach revealed that Kohli, who was then dating Anushka Sharma, approached him with a rather unusual request. Back then, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had a strict policy that only allowed the wives of cricketers to accompany them on overseas tours, no girlfriends. But for ‘Virushka’, love found its way. Shastri recalled:

“You know, when I was the coach in 2015, Virat was not married then, he was dating Anushka. He came and he said, 'You know, only wives are allowed, can I get my girlfriend in here?' I told him, ‘Yeah, sure.’ But then Virat said that the Board is not allowing it, then I made the call and she came up and joined in.”

Ravi Shastri’s one call seemed to make all the difference. When Anushka was allowed to join Kohli on the tour, it had a magical reaction on the cricketer, both on and off the field. In the very first game after her arrival, the Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, Virat smashed a stunning 160 runs. As he reached the milestone, he sent a flying kiss to Anushka sitting on the stand. Ravi Shastri recalled:

“In the very first game, he got a 160 and in the same scenes, the flying kiss went up, just like yesterday. So yeah, she has been a big support for Virat."

History seemed to repeat itself nearly a decade later, when in November 2024, on Day 3 of the first Test at Optus Stadium in Perth, Virat made his 81st international century, helping India get a massive lead over Australia. As soon as he reached the milestone, Virat turned towards the stands, spotted his now-wife Anushka, and sent her a flying kiss.

Ravi Shastri, now a commentator, couldn’t help but point out the striking similarities between the two moments, noting how Anushka has always been Virat’s pillar of strength. In his chat with Fox Cricket, which was recorded the very next day after the Perth match, Ravi Shastri remarked:

“She’s (Anushka) been a big support for him. You saw it in Melbourne back then, and you saw it again yesterday.”
