Govinda was the biggest superstar in the 1980s and 90s. From his hatke dance numbers to his over-the-top sartorial picks, everything about the actor was iconic. Govinda proved that you don’t need six-pack abs to rock a half-open shirt trend. He is still considered the Hero No. 1 in the Hindi film industry as no one else is close to him.
Whether it’s his subtle art of seduction with a wink or his socially-awkward jokes, it’s impossible to imagine Bollywood without Govinda’s movies. Though the actor shared a sizzling on-screen chemistry with actresses like Karishma Kapoor, Raveena Tandon, Rani Mukerji and many others, he had married the woman of his dreams, Sunita Ahuja, at a very early age. However, he had kept the news of their marriage a secret from the media and film industry.

Their marriage was a hush-hush filmy affair, but their love story is definitely made for the books. During an old interview with Simi Garewal, Govinda had revealed how he lost his heart to Sunita. They first met through family members as Govinda’s uncle and Sunita’s sister were married to one another. Sunita mentioned that her relationship with Govinda was feisty at first, but they felt butterflies in their stomach when their hand accidentally brushed against each other. While Govinda said in the interview that they liked each other a little bit but would often fight, Sunita replied:
“Bahana chahiye tha ladhne ka.”
Recalling how they took the plunge to marry, Sunita said that her love story with Govinda was half-love and half-arranged. Though the couple fell in love first, their parents played the cupid. Govinda and Sunita’s affair came out when her mother caught her exchanging one of the letters that they had been exchanging with each other. When asked what was written on the letter, Sunita revealed:
“I want to get married to you as early as possible”.

Soon after this incident, they tied the knot in a hush-hush ceremony on March 11, 1987. However, the doting son, Govinda still likes to believe that it was his mother who choose Sunita as his life partner for him. Recalling the exact words that his mother had told Govinda while convincing him to marriage, he stated:
“She said, ‘have faith in me and get married to this girl’.”

Govinda was made to believe that revealing his marital status would ruin his career in Bollywood. As keeping marriages a secret was a pretty common norm those days, Govinda and Sunita decided to abide by the same. But the actor realised that it was a “mistake” on his part that he didn’t declare his love for Sunita from the rooftop from the very beginning. His wife, he said, was kind enough to support him in his decision. When asked Sunita in the conversation if she ever felt bad about it, she denied it. However, Govinda mentioned:
“Isko lagta tha bura. But I always had that fear that everyone was trying to sabotage my career so when I was told that I shouldn’t declare my marriage, I did not. Sunita was my first love and I fell in love with her innocence.”
For the unversed, Govinda and Sunita are blessed with two children, Tina Ahuja and Yashvardhan Ahuja.
