Gary 'Mani' Mounfield who was widely known as the founding member and bassist of the English rock band, The Stone Roses, passed away at the age of 63. His untimely death has left his family and friends shocked and heartbroken. It was his brother, Greg Mounfield who confirmed the heartbreaking news of Gary’s demise. Recently, Gary had announced an extensive speaking UK tour from September 2026 to June 2027. However, his life was cut short leaving his fans grieving.

What caused Gary 'Mani' Mounfield's untimely demise at the age of 63?

On November 20, 2025, Gary’s brother, Greg Mounfield took to his Facebook handle and shared a note confirming the untimely death of his brother. He mentioned that with the 'heaviest of hearts' he is announing the tragic passing of his brother. The note can be read as:

"It is with the heaviest of hearts that I have to announce the sad passing of my brother."

According to latest reports, any kind of health issues that Gary suffered over the years has not been revealed. Although his tragic demise surfaced online along with several tributes, the exact cause of death has not been revealed yet. For the unversed, Gary’s wife, Imelda Mounfield passed away in 2023 due to cancer. She was diagnosed with bowel cancer 3 years before her death.

More about Gary 'Mani' Mounfield

Gary 'Mani' Mounfield was born on November 16, 1962 in Crumpsall. He attended Rusholme’s Xaverian college and left the school at the mere age of 16. He formed the band named, the Fireside Chaps with John Squire and Andy Couzens in the early '80s in Greater Manchester. However, with time the band’s name and lineup got changed. Later, after Ian Brown onboarding as the lead vocalist, their band got a new name, The Stone Roses. In 1989, they released their debut album. This album helped them to gain a wide recognition.

In 1996, the group got dissolved. Following this, Gary joined Scottish rock band, Primal Scream as a bassist. In a 2006 interview with Uncut magazine, he compared his life in the two bands, The Stone Roses and Primal Scream. He highlighted that in Primal Scream there has been more freedom than compared to The Stone Roses. He was quoted as saying:

"The Primals is more of a democracy, whereas with the Stone Roses we were more looking over our shoulder seeing if Ian and John [Squire] were pleased. Because they were writing the songs and being touted as the Lennon-McCartney, Jagger-Richards kind of thing. For me now there’s a lot more freedom. Primal Scream are as good at bullshit detection as the Stone Roses ever were."

In the same interview, he also opened up about his band, The Stone Roses' fallout. He mentioned that he had never seen this band’s fallout as 'failed mission'. For the unversed, the band, The Stone Roses was reformed in 2012. He was grateful for what happened. He highlighted that he grew up in North Manchester where everyone had gone through their own fair share of ups and downs. Coming to his personal front, he was married to Imelda Mounfield. The couple had twin sons. In his words:

"I never can see it as a failed mission – f***ing hell, I’m from north Manchester, not the best part of town, and I’ve been around the world two or three times playing music. I’m still comfortable, I’ve got a house. I could have ended up dealing crack or stealing cars or robbing houses, like a lot of my friends. Or dead."
