'IT: Welcome To Derry' Episode 6 Sparks Major Twist Before Finale, 'Pennywise' Is 'Ingrid's' Father?

IT: Welcome to Derry, Episode 6 has left the fans clutching their seats. The episode opens with 'Lilly' increasingly distanced from her friends. This comes right after the young girl has a terrifying vision and is convinced the meteor shard can be used to defeat the terror of Derry, 'Pennywise'. After seeing 'Pennywise' recoil from the shard, she becomes fixated on its potential. However, 'Ronnie' lashes out, because none of it was helping clear her father's name, creating a major fracture in the group. As episode 6 returns with intense plot twists and rewrites the expectations for the upcoming finale, let's take a look at what happened in IT: Welcome to Derry, Episode 6.

'Lilly' is isolated from the 'Losers Club'?

While 'Lilly' feels isolated from her group, 'Will', 'Rich', and 'Marge' attempt to rally everyone for a renewed stand against 'Pennywise'. However, 'Lilly' decides to seek help elsewhere. Believing that 'Ingrid' is the only person who will take her seriously, she goes home. However, another vision at school of 'Pennywise' appearing as her father in monstrous form pushes 'Lilly' further. 

'Lilly' enters 'Ingrid's' home uninvited and climbs to the attic. However, what she finds there leaves her completely baffled. She finds a set of pictures of 'Ingrid' as a child with her father, 'Bob Gray', but he looks exactly like 'Pennywise'. This establishes the episode's critical emotional arc: 'Ingrid's' decades-long belief that 'Pennywise' is her missing father.

'Ingrid' believes 'Pennywise' is her father

The revelation leaves 'Ingrid' in a state of delusion, offering fans a deeper look into her character. In both the series and IT: Chapter Two, glimpses of 'Bob's' carnival past as "Pennywise the Dancing Clown" have been evident. However, it's only in the show that it is implied that 'IT' likely encountered 'Bob', saw how popular his clown persona was with children, killed him, and assumed his identity. 'Ingrid', unaware of any of this, believed her father had abandoned her, and she clung to the hope that he would someday return.

Even in adulthood, which was marked by abuse and social isolation, including being a white woman in love with a Black man during the 1960s, 'Ingird' only deepened her need for hopeful delusion. However, when she later crossed paths with the entity 'Pennywise', she convinced herself that her father was trapped in some supernatural shadow. Her job at Juniper Hill and her awareness of 'Pennywise' became intertwined with this fantasy as she maintained that if 'Pennywise' could be freed from his "chains", she would finally reunite with her father.

The emotional longing drove her to follow 'Lilly's' group dressed as 'Periwinkle'. She believes that the children were destined to free her father from 'IT's' constraints. 'Ingrid' even offers to help 'Lilly' enter the sewers. However, the little girl refuses, realising how unstable 'Ingrid' has become. After a confrontation where 'Lilly' uses the meteor shard to fight her off, 'Ingrid' heads alone into 'Pennywise's' lair, consumed by her delusion.

'Hank' is in hiding, while 'Clint' is facing his downfall

While the show focuses on 'Ingrid' and 'Pennywise's' alleged history, the subplot takes a dramatic turn when 'Hank' is framed for the brutal murders of three kids, who were en route to Shawshank when a mysterious accident allowed him to escape. On the other hand, 'Charlotte' and 'Ingrid' smuggled him to an abandoned army outpost that 'Dick', 'Reggie', and 'Jax' have been using as a pub.

The army's ownership of the building meant 'Clint' never thought to search it, allowing 'Hank' to stay hidden. However, this oversight costs the former as the deputy mayor, seeking to blame someone, fires him to preserve his own reputation. In return, 'Clint' doubles down, and when he receives an anonymous tip that 'Hank' is hiding at the outpost, he chooses not to pursue lawful capture but rather calls the residents who already want 'Hank' dead.

Mob justice takes over 'Derry'

As if fans didn't already have enough to process IT: Welcome to Derry, Episode 6 further scored a final act that underscored the season's central themes: the cyclical, self-reinforcing violence that defines 'Derry'. 'Clint' rallies a mob fueled by anger, paranoia, and a desperate desire to blame someone. Historically, 'Hank', who had feared exactly this outcome, warned 'Ingrid' that if their relationship became known, he would end up lynched. The episode ends with the couple and the 'Losers Club' in grave danger as the mob converges on the building, ready to kill 'Hank' and anyone who stands in their way.

'Pennywise' feeds on the brewing chaos

The episode concludes by highlighting the real danger. However, it's not 'Pennywise' but the emotional and social decay he manipulates. The episode reflects on 'Derry's' internal divisions based on racial tensions, fear-based violence, scapegoating, and mob mentality, which feed 'Pennywise's' power. He requires one massive, bloody, chaotic event before entering hibernation, and the people of 'Derry' seem to be giving him just that. As fans wait for the next episode of IT: Welcome to Derry, one thing is for sure: the audience is in for a ride they hadn't expected.
