Nancy Guthrie's case is yet to be solved but a new controversy has emerged in the ongoing high-profile investigation. Several questions are now being raised about whether critical evidence was compromised due to negligence on the crime scene or not. Meanwhile, a former Pima County Sheriff's comments had added a new angle of criticism to the case.
Savannah Guthrie's mother, Nancy Guthrie's disappearance has yielded no result in the past two months of investigation. While the doubts are rising over the investigation, a former Sheriff has publicly called out Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos, who managed the crime scene. For those unaware, the 84-year-old went missing from her Tucson area home on February 1, 2025.

Meanwhile, former Sheriff, Dr. Richard Carmona has raised new concerns on NewsNation’s Brian Entin Investigates. He questioned the actions of Chris Nanos especially due to his decision to reopen the crime scene. Also, he argued that lead investigators and not the sheriff's should typically make such decisions. He explained that usually all the crime scenes are secured until every evidence is properly collected, documented and processed. Sharing concerns, the former Sheriff says,
“That’s not something a sheriff does. It’s the lead detective that’s out there that says, "We can open this area now because we have made this determination that all of the evidence necessary has been photographed, bagged, tagged, and so on.”

Furthermore, he suggested that the premature opening of the crime scene can raise concerns during the legal proceedings of the case. Notably, he has shared his concern at home when Chris Nanos is already facing a no-confidence vote over his management of his case. He also questioned reports of food delivery at the crime scene and who allowed the same during the early stage of investigation. In his words:
“If you’re going to court and you’re making a case, a defense attorney says, ‘That crime scene was corrupted, you had people delivering pizzas. How do we know this is real evidence? Once it has been corrupted, that’s the end of it.”

On the other hand, Pima County Sheriff has frequently defended his department’s management of the investigation. While speaking to KVOA about the case, he said that he supports his team and their decisions. Additionally, Chris highlighted that they have been working dedicatedly on the case and they are still pursuing leads amid pressure. Sharing his views on the criticism coming his way, Chris said:

“I don’t regret we let the crime scene go too soon or any of that, that’s just. Meanwhile, investigators and Guthrie’s family continue to urge anyone with information about her disappearance to come forward.”
Meanwhile, after nearly 60 days, Nancy Guthrie’s case is still unsolved. Although the investigation has continued in the case, there have been no primary suspects or arrests. The 84-year-old was last seen on January 31, 2026 at her home in the Catalina Foothills near Tuscon. Authorities believe she has been abducted and her blood found at the crime scene later confirmed the same. Even surveillance footage released by the FBI shows a masked person near her front door on the night of her disappearance but no development has made in that direction.

What do you think about the criticism of Chris Nanos's management of Nancy Guthrie's abduction crime scene?
