On May 12, 2025, Virat Kohli took to his IG handle and announced his retirement from the Test cricket format. On an emotional note, he shared how he began 14 years back in the format and how it tested him, shaped him, and gave him lessons that he would carry forward in his life. He further added that there is something personal in playing in white and moving away from this isn't easy but felt right. In the ending portion of his note, Virat shared that he would walk away with a heart full of gratitude. Virat said goodbye to the format, to those he shared the field with, and to those who made him feel seen all along the way.
While Virat Kohli said goodbye to the test format, let's have a look at his per-match salary in the red-ball format. For the unversed, along with the BCCI's central contracts that have four grades with different annual salaries, per-match salaries for Test cricket are also provided, along with ODIs and T20Is. Bonus is also included which depends on the performances of the cricketers. If we talk about Virat, then, as per the reports, he used to get Rs. 15 lakh for each Test match along with his annual salary of Rs. 7 crore.
Taking to his IG handle, AB de Villiers dropped a photo with Virat Kohli to congratulate him as the latter bids farewell to the red-ball format. In the note, he called Virat his 'biscotti' and 'legend' and stated that King Kohli's determination and skills always inspired him. Jasprit Bumrah also took to his IG handle, and dropped an adorable photo with Virat Kohli along with an emotional note. In the note, Bumrah added how incredible a journey it was to make his own debut under Virat's captaincy and to be inspired by King Kohli. Among others, Kuldeep Yadav also dropped an adorable post for Virat.
For the unversed, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli's bond on the field and even in real life stood strong as an example. The two great cricketers have always proved their mettle separately and even in partnerships. It was a few days ago, when Rohit Sharma too announced his retirement from the test cricket captaincy. It was after lifting the T20 World Cup, that Virat and Rohit announced their retirement from the T20I format.
