Vinod Khosla was born in Pune, Maharashtra, on January 28, 1955, into a Punjabi family. His father was an officer in the Indian army and wanted his son to follow in his footsteps. At the age of 16, he started dreaming of founding an IT company after witnessing the founding of Intel company. After graduation, Vinod Khosla left India and went to the US to pursue a master's degree in biomedical engineering. He took admission to Carnegie Mellon University. With a dream to open his own company, he went to Silicon Valley, where he decided to pursue an MBA from the prestigious Stanford University Graduate School of Business. After completing his post-graduation, Vinod Khosla founded Daisy Systems, a significant computer-aided design system for electrical engineers. In the following years, he started Sun Microsystems in 1982 with John Doerr of Kleiner Perkins Caufield and Byers (KPCB).
Once, in an old interview with the Economic Times, Vinod Khosla opened up about his first entrepreneurial venture and revealed that it was a failure as it never got off the ground. Opening up about the same, Vinod shared that he was so passionate about entrepreneurship that he wanted to build a company as soon as possible. In his thirst for entrepreneurship, Vinod Khosla created a soy milk company and heard about an institute in Nainital that developed the technology to make milk from soya beans. However, he gave up on the idea due to several issues and went to Silicon Valley to begin a start-up there.
