He started his training and career as a fast bowler, but he shifted to spin bowling due to an injury in 2017.

Varun Chakravarthy made his List A debut for Tamil Nadu on September 20, 2018, in a Vijay Hazare Trophy for Tamil Nadu. In the following years, the cricketer made his First-Class debut for Tamil Nadu on November 12, 2018, in the 2018-19 Ranji Trophy. Courtesy of his impressive numbers in domestic cricket, Varun was bought by the Kings XI Punjab in the 2019 Indian Premier League (IPL). In October 2020, Varun took five wickets for Kolkata Knight Riders for just 20 runs.
