While his father worked as an ITS Officer for BSNL, his mother is a homemaker. Varun completed his schooling from Kendriya Vidyalaya CLRI and St. Patrick's Anglo Indian Higher Secondary School. From an early age, Varun had a strong inclination towards cricket but left it to focus on his studies.

After completing his schooling, Varun Chakravarthy took admission to SRM University from where he pursued a bachelor's degree in architecture. He had worked in the architecture industry for some years after finishing his graduation. After some time working as an architect, Varun finally listened to his heart and left his well-paid architect job for cricket. It was difficult for Varun to leave his job and pursue his dream of playing cricket for India. He started his training and career as a fast bowler, but he shifted to spin bowling due to an injury in 2017.

Varun Chakravarthy made his List A debut for Tamil Nadu on September 20, 2018, in a Vijay Hazare Trophy for Tamil Nadu. In the following years, the cricketer made his First-Class debut for Tamil Nadu on November 12, 2018, in the 2018-19 Ranji Trophy. Courtesy of his impressive numbers in domestic cricket, Varun was bought by the Kings XI Punjab in the 2019 Indian Premier League (IPL). In October 2020, Varun took five wickets for Kolkata Knight Riders for just 20 runs. Fast forward to 2025, and he has now introduced himself to world cricket with his 5-wicket haul against the Kiwis in the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy.
