Playback Singer, Usha Uthup's Husband, Jani Chacko Passes Away At 78, After Suffering Cardiac Arrest

Indian pop sensation, Usha Uthup is going through an extremely tough phase as her husband, Jani Chacko Uthup, passed away in Kolkata on July 8, 2024. According to multiple reports, Jani, who was 78, suffered a cardiac arrest. As per the news agency PTI, Jani experienced discomfort while he was watching TV at home.

The family immediately took him to a nearby hospital, but he was pronounced dead. The reason behind his death is stated to be cardiac arrest. The last rites of Jani Chacko will take place on July 9, 2024. Usha’s daughter, Anjali, posted a picture of Jani and penned an emotional note, which could be read as:

“Appa…gone too soon…but as stylishly as you lived…most handsome man in the world…we love you a true gentleman and Lawrencian to the core and the finest Tea Taster.”

Before Jani, Usha was married to the late Ramu Iyer. Jani Chacko is Usha Uthup’s second husband. He was associated with the tea plantation industry. Jani and Usha met for the first time in the popular nightclub, Trincas in the 1970s. The couple has two kids, Sunny and Anjali.

Usha Uthup’s professional life

Usha Uthup is one of the most renowned faces of Indian pop and jazz music. Born in a Tamil-speaking Brahmin Iyer family, Usha’s music career started in 1969, when she started singing in a nightclub called Nine Gems in Chennai. It was while performing at the Oberoi Hotel in Delhi that Dev Anand visited the nightclub and spotted Usha.

Dev Anand offered her playback singing, and she sang an English number and the title track of the film, Hare Rama Hare Krishna. With her first song in the Hindi film industry, Usha rose to fame and sang hit numbers like Hari Om Hari, Shaan Se, Ramba, Koi Yahan Aha Nache Nache, Darling, and many more. Apart from Hindi films, Usha also sang in South Indian films like Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam. In 2024, Usha was also conferred with the Padma Bhushan.

Earlier, in an interview with The Times Of India, Usha talked about her first job and revealed that she used to get Rs. 750 per month. She also called the experience of singing exciting and shared that it was her aunt, who helped her get a few gigs. Revealing how she was the highest-paid singer in those days, Usha was quoted as saying:

“I signed my professional contract with a hotel. And that was really something fantastic because, at the end of it, I got 750 rupees. Not for one show, but I got this amount for a month. I was standing and singing at the club and it was fantastic and I was the highest-paid singer in those days, I mean as a nightclub singer. So the thrill of earning that money was something else."
