The US Federal Reserve, led by Jerome Powell, the 16th Chair of the Federal Reserve, has cut interest rates by 25 basis points. The third consecutive rate cut of 2025 brought the benchmark rate down to 3.50 per cent to 3.75 per cent, instantly providing much-needed confidence on Wall Street. According to the latest reports, Dow Jones jumped nearly 500 points, while the Nasdaq and S&P 500 closed higher.
With lower rates, borrowing costs will fall, and some relief may be seen in sectors such as housing, consumer loans, and credit. Another important development that caught everyone’s attention was the 10-year US Treasury yield falling below 4 percent, signaling looser financial conditions and manageable inflation. If analysts are to be believed, we could see another rate cut in the early months of 2026.

It also brings more foreign investment and global liquidity to India.

After the US Fed Meeting 2025, Jerome Powell is leading all the headlines for cutting rates by 25 basis points. For the uninitiated, Powell is considered as one of the most powerful figures in the world economy. The decision by the Chair of the US Federal Reserve on interest rates, liquidity, and monetary policy can ripple through world markets. It's why there’s always a tight spotlight on Powell’s decisions, which can shift the course of the world economy.

Born in 1953 in Washington, D.C., Jerome Powell comes from a family of lawyers and public servants. His father was a lawyer, and his mother was a homemaker. Powell studied politics at Princeton University and attained a degree in law from Georgetown University. After completing his degrees, Powell worked in the public service sector in the early 1990s at the US Treasury and later joined the Federal Reserve Board in 2012. Despite not being a politician, his bipartisan acceptability played the biggest role in his appointment as the 16th Chair of the Federal Reserve in 2018.
