Urmila Matondkar ruled in the '90s with her mesmerising looks, impeccable acting skills, and impressive screen presence. Although she has been a woman of few words, the actress has always been honest in her interviews and often shares interesting insights from her experience in the film industry. In the last few years, Urmila has made her way into politics and judged reality TV shows. Recently, the actress gathered with her 1998 film, Satya's team, including Manoj Bajpayee, Makarand Deshpande, JD Chakravarthy, and Ram Gopal Varma, as the film completed 26 years. Together, the cast shared interesting anecdotes about the film in an interview.
Fans have always admired Urmila Matondkar's beauty and sometimes discussed her looks more than her acting, which irked her. The actress recalled one such incident in her interview with Radio Nasha. She mentioned that after Rangeela, whose glamourous looks made headlines, they worked on finding cheap sarees for her to wear in Satya. Despite this, she was asked about her looks in one of her interviews, which irked her. Recalling the incident, she said:
"I was like, 'Yaar, why are you all so obsessed with my pout and image? I am wearing sarees worth Rs 500."
The actress noted that mobile phones were not common during that era. Soon, she got a call from costume designer, Manish Malhotra, who was unhappy with her statement. He yelled at her for revealing that she wore cheap sarees in the film. She recalled:
"He yelled, 'Tumne Rs 500 ka saree kyu bola? Was it necessary to mention THAT?' I was like, 'Manish, that's the whole point.' I guess he missed it. But, today, he would have been happy that it was okay. It's made up for it."
In the same conversation, Urmila Matondkar shared that she was once shooting for lunch for a scene with Shefali Shah and Manoj Bajpayee. Although the actors were young, their body language and acting convinced others that they had played the role of a couple for 20 years. As she sat and watched them, she realised she had sat in front of talented people. It cemented her determination to prove all those critics wrong who focused on her glamour quotient and didn't look past it.
