Tommaso Cioni Still Not Cleared? Megyn Kelly Backs 'Prime Suspect' Debate In Nancy Guthrie Case

Today marks the 20th day since Nancy Guthrie, the mother of NBC anchor Savannah Guthrie, was reported missing from her Catalina Foothills home in Tucson, Arizona. With the manhunt now gone international, the fingers are once again being raised towards Nancy's son-in-law, Tommaso Cioni. Days after the Pima County Sheriff’s Department publicly stated that all of Nancy Guthrie’s relatives, including her children and sons-in-law, had been cleared in the case, fresh media commentary has reignited speculation that Tommaso may not be off the hook.

Why is Tommaso Cioni back in the spotlight, after getting clearance in Nancy Guthrie's investigation?

84-year-old Nancy Guthrie was last seen on the late evening of January 31, 2026, after she returned from a dinner at her daughter Annie's home, a ten-minute drive from her Catalina Foothills residence. As far as reports go, Annie's husband, Tommaso Cioni, was the last person to see Nancy as he dropped her off at her residence around 9:50 p.m. She was reported missing the following morning after failing to attend church. Authorities believe she was abducted overnight.

Tommaso Cioni has since been a person of interest among the public. While law enforcement, including Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos, emphasised that no member of the Guthrie family, including the extended family of Savannah and Annie Guthrie, is a suspect, popular journalist and attorney Megyn Kelly recently argued on her SiriusXM show that it would be “inappropriate” not to scrutinise the last person known to have seen Nancy alive. Kelly claimed:

"The reason they are going back to Annie's and Tommaso's house all the time, I think, is they're wondering if they had anything to do with it. I just don't understand why you'd be interviewing the neighbours over and over and over."

Kelly's recent comment echoed the earlier remarks by former NewsNation anchor Ashleigh Banfield, who suggested Tommaso Cioni could be considered a "prime suspect" in Nancy Guthrie's disappearance. Her remark was strongly criticised, with Sheriff Nanos calling it a reckless move from a journalist's part, as no one had been officially labelled a suspect.

What are the officials saying about Tommaso Cioni's alleged involvement in Nancy Guthrie's disappearance?

Despite having their names cleared, Tommaso Cioni and Annie Guthrie are continuously facing public scrutiny, especially given the multiple trips that officials made to their Tucson home and their neighbourhood. Addressing the popular speculation, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said in a new interview with The Daily Mail:

“I've not been in touch with Tommaso or Annie too much... but I know the investigators are in touch with them. I understand the pundits are out there. They're gonna say, well, he's the last one to see her alive. We understand that stuff. But, my goodness, you're putting a mark on somebody who could be completely innocent. And more important than that, he's family.”

The sheriff also emphasised that no conclusion has been drawn about anyone, as the investigation remains active and ongoing. So far, no individual has been officially ruled out as a suspect or a person of interest.

Nancy Guthrie may be alive and taken to Mexico

Amid the ongoing manhunt for Nancy Guthrie, a new ransom note has provided chilling new evidence that the 84-year-old may be alive and aware of the demands made in exchange for her information. In a new and "sophisticated" ransom note sent to TMZ, the sender has allegedly hinted at an international kidnapping. Reportedly, the FBI has formally contacted Mexican federal authorities as part of the ongoing search.

Although investigators have not uncovered any solid leads, law enforcement agencies on both sides of the U.S.–Mexico border, including local police departments, are now working together to follow up on potential tips. While the idea was initially considered unlikely, officials now believe Nancy Guthrie may have been transported into Mexico at some point after the abduction, even if it didn’t happen right away.
