'TMKOC's' Iconic Dialogue, 'Ae Paagal Aurat' Was Banned! Dilip Joshi Reveals The Surprising Reason

Whether you are a '90s kid or a Gen Z, if there is one show that has been tickling our funny bones across generations of Indians, it’s none other than the iconic Hindi sitcom, Taarak  Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah (TMKOC). The show has been running successfully for over 15 years now, and despite its various twists and turns, nothing beats the hilarious and heartwarming chemistry between ‘Jethalal’ (Dilip Joshi) and ‘Dayaben’ (Disha Vakani).

The phrase, “Ae paagal aurat” was never a part of the script

Dilip and Disha’s on-screen banter has given fans countless unforgettable moments, and one that stands out is Jethalal’s iconic catchphrase, “Ae paagal aurat,” which continues to spark meme fests even today! But did you know this legendary line is no longer part of the sitcom? Dilip Joshi recently spilled the beans on why it was axed. Fans of TMKOC will fondly remember the hilarious back-and-forth between Jethalal Gada (Dilip Joshi) and his on-screen wife Dayaben (Disha Vakani). Their chemistry was pure comedy gold. While OG fans still miss seeing the duo together on screen, they can never forget Jethalal’s signature line, “Ae paagal aurat,” which he often blurted out whenever Daya did something silly or outrageous.

Dilip Joshi as Jethalal

The star of the show, Dilip Joshi, aka ‘Jethalal’, recently appeared on comedian Sorabh Pant’s podcast, where he shared a surprising revelation: his iconic dialogue, “Ae paagal aurat,” was never in the script! It was actually his own improvisation: an impromptu line that, paired with Disha Vakani’s legendary expressions, became the perfect comic masala fans didn’t know they needed. And the rest, as they say, is history. Dilip Joshi revealed:

“Yeh jo ‘paagal aurat’ wala tha, woh maine improvise kiya.”

Despite its popularity, the dialogue didn’t go down well with everyone. Dilip Joshi shared that a women’s rights group took offence to the phrase, calling it disrespectful and demeaning towards women. In response to these concerns, the makers of TMKOC decided to completely drop the line from the show. Dilip revealed that the dialogue sparked quite a backlash and even triggered what he described as a kind of women’s liberation movement. He shared:

“Baad mein, uspe kuch women's lib ya koi movement tha, mujhe bataya gaya, 'Aage se, aap yeh nahi bolenge'.”

Even though the line was banned, it continues to live rent-free in fans' minds. Whether it's in throwback episodes, memes, or nostalgic conversations, “Ae Pagal Aurat” remains a fan-favourite moment from the golden era of TMKOC. After Disha Vakani left the show in 2017 to focus on her family, fans particularly missed the iconic Jetha-Dayaben moments.
