'The Trial Season 2' Review: Kajol Starrer Legal Drama Is Entangled With Dark Politics And More

Kajol is one of the most versatile actresses in the Hindi film industry. Over the years, she has delivered numerous hits to the industry, including Baazigar, Karan Arjun, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Ishq, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, and many more. She made her OTT debut with the legal drama series, The Trial. Kajol portrayed the role of 'Noyonika Sengupta,' who is the protagonist of the series. Now, the legal drama is back with a new season, The Trial Season 2. Now that Season 2 of The Trial has been released on JioHotstar, let’s dive in to see if it is worth watching or not.

The plotline of The Trial Season 2

Before delving into the plotline of The Trial Season 2, let’s have a quick recap of the previous season. The first season of The Trial introduced 'Noyonika Sengupta' (played by Kajol) as a law graduate, who sacrificed her career to become a full-time homemaker and raise her two daughters. However, her life took a drastic turn when her husband, 'Rajiv Sengupta' (played by Jisshu Sengupta), was caught in a s*x and corruption scandal and sent behind bars. With no other choices left, 'Noyonika' returned to the world, which she once owned as a junior lawyer, to support her family. Along the way, she struggled to balance both her professional and personal responsibilities and dealt with constant humiliation for her husband’s scandal.

The Trial Season 2 begins right from where Season 1 ends. 'Noyonika' is no longer a hesitant lawyer. She has transformed herself into a confident and assertive law professional, who is capable of taking up complex and high-profile cases. She now works alongside 'Vishal Chaubey' (played by Alyy Khan), 'Malini Khanna' (played by Sheeba Chaddha), and 'Param Munjal' (played by Karanvir Sharma). Meanwhile, 'Rajiv' has stepped into politics, and is preparing hard to contest elections against the powerful opponent, 'Narayani Dhole' (played by Sonali Kulkarni). The new season kicks off with 'Noyonika' and 'Rajiv's' younger daughter, 'Anaira', being hospitalised after she has a panic attack, due to her parents’ constant heated arguments and fights. Their elder daughter, 'Ananya', also distances herself from them for this reason.

Seeing their daughters suffer, the couple agree to stay together, at least for the sake of their children. The story of the series moves forward three months. 'Noyonika' has fully immersed herself in her legal practice and has been tackling the difficult cases fearlessly. However, the Sengupta family face a new force challenging them. The force is none other than 'Narayani', who begins targeting 'Rajiv' and his family to gain an electoral advantage. 'Noyonika', too, gets entangled with the dark politics. At the same time, she is also struggling with her personal life, torn between giving 'Rajiv' another chance and confronting the pain of his betrayal. However, the biggest looming issue in this season is whether 'Noyonika' will forgive 'Rajiv' and give him another chance or finally take a bold stand against him.

What are critics saying about The Trial Season 2?

Critics across leading publications have given mixed responses to The Trial Season 2. While many praised the performances, especially those of Kajol and Sonali Kulkarni, others felt that the story and its execution did not fully live up to expectations. The Scroll noted that, although there is no shortage of drama, the show is lacking its spark, which was established in Season 1. India Today highlighted that instead of focusing on intense courtroom battles, the new season leans more toward emotional and political drama.

Times Now added that the direction by Umesh Bist is quite strong and the dialogues are well-written. At the same time, the screenplay feels average, with some subplots remaining unresolved, and the episodes are unnecessarily stretched long. On the positive side, the performances by Kajol, Sonali Kulkarni, Jisshu Sengupta, and Kubbra Sait were applauded, with Sonali Kulkarni standing out among the others.

Final Verdict: Is The Trial Season 2 worth watching?

The Trial Season 2 emerges as a fair continuation of the legal drama, with Kajol’s confident portrayal of 'Noyonika' and Sonali Kulkarni’s standout act as 'Narayani Dhole'. Though the series struggles with its stretched episodes, average screenplay, and fewer gripping legal battles, it compensates with strong performances, sharp dialogues, and layered emotional and political conflicts. If you enjoy character-driven stories and family drama mixed with power struggles, The Trial Season 2 is still worth adding to your weekend watchlist.
