The Odyssey, the upcoming film directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker, Christopher Nolan, has already created a buzz. The film features American actor, Matt Damon as 'Odysseus'. As Nolan is a celebrated filmmaker and is widely known for his Hollywood blockbusters, including The Dark Knight franchise, Memento, The Prestige and Oppenheimer. However, after Nolan won the Oscars for the epic biographical thriller film, Oppenheimer, the anticipation for The Odyssey is much higher. Now that the film’s trailer is grabbing a lot of attention, let’s learn more about it.

According to a report by Deadline, Universal Studios took to their X (formerly Twitter) handle and shared an unheard story behind the upcoming film helmed by the Oscar-winning filmmaker, Christopher Nolan. In the note, they mentioned that the film will be based on Homer’s epic poem, Odyssey, written around the 8th century BCE. In the note, they also revealed the release date of The Odyssey. The film is scheduled to hit the big screens on July 17, 2026.

For the unversed, the epic poem revolves around the King of Ithaca, Odysseus, whose journey back home after the Trojan War was filled with challenges.  In his long journey, the true hero, Odysseus, will encounter negative forces, including Polyphemus the Cyclops, Sirens, Calypso and the witch goddess, Circe. These encounters will delay his reunion with his wife, Penelope, who was waiting for him and finding ways to avoid suitors who had been showing interest in marrying her, as they believed that the King of Ithaca died. The note shared by Universal Studios can be read as:

"Christopher Nolan’s next film, The Odyssey, is a mythic action epic shot across the world using brand new IMAX film technology. The film brings Homer’s foundational saga to IMAX film screens for the first time and opens in theatres everywhere on July 17, 2026."

Based on an ancient Greek epic poem, Odyssey, written by Homer, the film stars Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Zendaya, Mia Goth and more. According to multiple reports, Matt Damon will play the role of 'Odysseus', Tom Holland will portray the role of his son, 'Telemachus', Anne Hathaway will be seen in the role of 'Penelope', wife of 'Odysseus', Robert will play the role of 'Antinous', one of 'Penelope's' suitors, Zendaya will be seen playing the role of 'Anthena', the goddess of wisdom and Mia Goth will portray the role of 'Melantho', a maid of 'Penelope' and 'Odysseus'.

Matt Damon opened up about his role in The Odyssey

In a recent interview with Empire magazine, Matt Damon, who will be seen in the role of 'Odysseus', opened up about his character in the film. He shared that the role is far different from the character he played in the epic biographical thriller film, Oppenheimer. He called The Odyssey a cinematic blockbuster. He mentioned how things felt real, just like the Trojan Horse scene. He went on to say that the director, Christopher Nolan, didn’t eliminate and kept the film close to the original epic poem. He was quoted as saying:

"It should be the most massively entertaining film. It should feel mythic. I saw the [Trojan] horse on the beach, and I was just like, 'F***. ' It was just so cool. "If you're having an existential crisis tied to the mast as you pass the Sirens, it's there. If it says you're running for your life from a Cyclops, you're going to run for your life. Chris doesn't hide the ball."
