'The Marvels' Director Said K-Drama Star, Park Seo Joon's 'Aura' Led Her To Cast Him As 'Prince Yan'

South Korean star, Park Seo Joon, is all set to enter into Hollywood with his role as ‘Prince Yan’ in the upcoming MCU film, The Marvels. The popular actor has previously proved his mettle with his lead roles in K-dramas such as What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim, Itaewon Class, Fight For My Way, A Witch’s Love, and Hwarang: The Poet Warrior Youth, among others.

The South Korean biggie has already embarked on a new phase of his career, where he is all ready to make a name for himself on the global stage with his character ‘Prince Yan’.  In a recent interview with South Korean film magazine, Cine21, Nia DaCosta, the director of The Marvels, discussed the upcoming release of the film in East Asia on November 8, 2023. DaCosta shared details about how she cast Park Seo Joon for a role in the movie.

The Marvels director, Nia DaCosta, revealed why she chose K-drama biggie, Park Seo Joon for her movie

The 33-year-old African-American filmmaker, Nia DaCosta, is the youngest director to work on a film by the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The director has previously worked on projects like Little Woods and Candyman and was hired by the Marvel Studios in August 2020 to direct the upcoming film, The Marvels, which is a sequel to the 2019 film, Captain Marvel.

In the interview, Nia DaCosta opened up about how she rediscovered her love for dramas from Hallyu. She said it all started when the world was hit with the COVID-19 pandemic. She said:

“I love K-dramas. It’s been years since I’ve been into them. It all started in my teenage years. My favourites were On Air, Soulmate and My Lovely Sam Soon. During the COVID-19 pandemic, I was recommended Itaewon Class by some of my friends who told me that I would like the show.”

For the unversed, the K-drama, Itaewon Class was broadcasted from January to March of 2020 on JTBC in South Korea and globally on Netflix. The show featured Park Seo Joon as its lead character, ‘Park Saeroyi’, and it became one of the most popular and critically acclaimed K-dramas of the year. 

Nia DaCosta further added that his impeccable acting and cool demeanour in the K-drama led her to check out a few other previous projects of the 34-year-old actor. And when she was offered to direct The Marvels, she immediately knew whom to cast as ‘Prince Yan’. She revealed:

“So, one day, I binge-watched Itaewon Class to return to those days. And Seo Joon’s acting in the drama really impressed me. When I was offered to direct The Marvels, I thought hard about who to choose for the role of ‘Prince Yan’. Then, suddenly, Park Seo Joon came to my mind.”

Previously, the South Korean actor, Park Seo Joon opened up about his role in the upcoming MCU film. in an interview with The Guardian in 2022, he mentioned that he was surprised when he learned that Marvel Studios expressed interest in speaking with him. Despite being a little apprehensive about working overseas, he found the cast and crew to be supportive and friendly, and he swiftly integrated into the team. He said:

“When I first heard that the Marvel Cinematic Universe wanted to speak with me, I couldn’t believe it. I actually couldn’t believe it. I’m not someone who has a fear of challenges, but whether I am filming in South Korea or abroad, everything is a challenge for me. So, I did feel some nerves at first. But everyone was so helpful and welcoming that I was able to find my feet really quickly.”
