The Housemaid was first a thriller novel published by Freida McFadden in 2022. After garnering a lot of readers and becoming a best-seller, The Housemaid book has finally been made into a movie with a stellar cast. Sydney Sweeney is going to play the role of 'Millie', meanwhile, Amanda Seyfried will be seen as 'Nina' and Branden Sklenar as her on-screen husband, 'Andrew'. Michele Morrone will be playing the role of their gardener, 'Enzo'.
The plot, as given in the book, follows the story of an ex-convict, 'Millie', who wants to leave her past behind. As a result, she takes up the opportunity to work as a live-in housemaid for the wealthy 'Winchester family', which includes 'Nina', her husband 'Andrew' and their daughter. As 'Millie' starts living with the family of three, dark secrets are revealed as imminent danger lurks in the house. Is 'Millie' dangerous for the family, or is the seeminly perfect 'Winchester family' trying to trap her? It will all be revealed in the film.
Directed by Paul Feig, The Housemaid is set to release on the big screen on December 19, 2025. The trailer features a dark rendition of Sabrina Carpenter's pop song, Please Please Please. The groovy pop song has been transformed into a dark and sombre background score for the upcoming movie, which complements the unsettling, dark tone set for the film. People are also excited to experience this version of the song in the theatres while Sydney and Amanda weave magic with their thrilling performances.

Freida McFadden wrote The Housemaid in 2019, however, she left the project midway because the story was reportedly too dark. After she was approached by a British publishing company in 2022, which offered to publish one of her works, the author decided to share with them The Housemaid. The book became an instant hit, selling around 1.6 million copies, according to The Washington Post. Following the success of the first book, it was made into a franchise, with The Housemaid's Secret released in 2023 and The Housemaid Is Watching in 2024.
