The 2025 season finale of The Great British Baking Show concluded with more than just the crowning of a winner—it ended with a poignant tribute to one of its own. After the final buzzer and the warm-hearted updates on the bakers, the screen faded to black and displayed a single message: “In Loving Memory of Dan Blackman, 1974 to 2025.” This quiet moment honoured Blackman, a seasoned editor, whose steady hand helped shape the tone and rhythm of the beloved baking series.
Blackman was born in the Cheshire area of England and later attended the University of the West of England in Bristol, where he earned a degree in History and Politics. He began his television career at the BBC, spending 13 years working on documentaries and non-fiction series, including Planet Earth: The Future and Timeshift. In 2011, he moved into freelance editing, and by 2018, he was a key member of the Great British Baking Show team (known outside the UK as The Great British Bake Off).
Over the next five years, Blackman served as an editor, on the series, helping craft its friendly, comforting aesthetic, which was crucial to the show’s global appeal. His credits also include other well-loved UK programmes such as Autumnwatch, Winterwatch, Springwatch, Nadiya’s Everyday Baking, Changing Rooms, and The Great Pottery Throw Down. Colleagues remembered him fondly; editor Julia Foot described him as a “gentle, intelligent man and an excellent editor.”
Blackman’s death at age 51 sent ripples through the UK television community. Funeral services were held in September in Cheshire, with a memorial service in October in Bristol. The dedication in the baking show’s finale wasn’t just a formal note; it was a sincere acknowledgement of the behind-the-scenes talent whose work helped bring the show’s heart to life.

In the grand finale of the 2025 season of The Great British Baking Show (also known as the British Bake-Off), 23-year-old medical student, Jasmine Mitchell was crowned the winner, defeating finalists, Tom Arden and Aaron Mountford-Myles in a high stake showdown. The finale challenged the bakers with three rigorous rounds: a classic British iced finger bun for the Signature, a tower of delicate madeleines for the Technical, and a show-stopping dessert, arguably the largest cake in the show’s history, for the Showstopper.
Jasmine’s cake, a cardamom sponge layered with almond-raspberry and lemon-mascarpone, topped with vanilla Swiss meringue buttercream, earned glowing praise from judges Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith. She tied the record for five Star Baker titles in a single series, an achievement no competitor before had converted into the overall win.
Paul Hollywood called her ‘the best one we have seen for quite a while.’ Beyond her baking accolades, Jasmine’s journey resonated on a personal level. She competed while living with alopecia and chose to appear without a wig, calling her win not just a culinary triumph but a milestone in self-acceptance.
