Cindy Cullers and Mel Owens have connected over being divorced after many years of marriage and being single parents to their children. Cindy was previously married to someone named Marc Cullers. With him, she has three daughters, Sarah, Emily, and Caroline. Two of her older daughters are married. Talking about her marriage to Marc, Cindy said that her parents' split had affected her. Hence, having grown up in a broken home, she never wanted her children to go through it. As a result, it took her 20 years to realise that her marriage wasn't functioning.. Cindy shared:

“I married him (Marc) because I come from a broken home. Mom and dad split up. My dad was an awful person. He and I got married, and I knew the most important thing for me was he had to be family-oriented because my family is everything. I wanted to have kids. I never wanted them to go through a divorce like I went through. So I married him primarily for that.”

Like Cindy Cullers, Mel Owens is also a divorcee. He was once married to Fabiana Pimentel, a Brazilian businesswoman. The two had tied the knot in 2002 and have two sons. In 2020, the couple separated, with Fabiana filing for divorce, citing irreconcilable differences. The divorce was finalised in 2024. A few months after that, ABC announced that Mel Owens would star in The Golden Bachelor.

Cindy is a former biomedical engineer. In the 90s, she worked in medical aesthetic sales but took a hiatus to focus on her family. In 2015, she returned to the workforce as a sales specialist. However, now Cindy is a self-employed consultant. Talking about her dating life, Cindy once dated another celebrity before Mel Owens. And it was none other than Chuck Norris. However, Mel surprised everyone with a fairytale ending for the show. Reportedly, he asked Peg Munson to marry him and proposed to her with a ring that he had bought even before the show started. The makers might also be planning a televised wedding for Peg and Mel, just like the one Gerry Turner and Theresa Nist had in The Golden Bachelor season 1.
