The Bride!, the much-anticipated Gothic romance film, is currently the talk of the town. The film starring Jessie Buckley and Christian Bale is inspired by the 1935 film, Bride of Frankenstein, which was based on Mary Shelley’s iconic 1818 novel. Directed by Maggie Gyllenhaal, the American Gothic romance film is all set to release in the United States on March 6, 2026. Amid the buzz, let’s learn what to expect in The Bride!
The story of the American Gothic romance film, The Bride! revolves around a lonesome monster, 'Frankenstein' (played by Christian Bale). The film is set against the backdrop of 1930s Chicago, where 'Frankenstein' is on the lookout for a companion. He appoints 'Dr. Euphronios' (played by Annette Bening) to create a partner for himself. The duo revive a m**dered young woman and name her 'The Bride of Frankenstein' (played by Jessie Buckley). However, little do 'Frankenstein' and 'Dr. Euphronios' knows about 'The Bride of Frankenstein's' powerful side. Soon, an intense love story begins and catches the attention of the cops as 'Frankenstein' and his bride embark on a killing spree.

The theme of the American Gothic romance, The Bride!, is consent. At the world premiere of the movie in London, director, Maggie Gyllenhaal told Deadline that her upcoming film focuses on the bride’s perspective and questions why she has been created without her consent. Maggie highlighted that in the original story, the theme of consent was not included. The director added that she thinks while 'Frankenstein's' requirement of a companion is important, the bride’s consent is equally justifiable. She was quoted as saying:
"In the mythology of the Bride of Frankenstein, that’s the major issue. I can’t make a movie about the bride of Frankenstein without consent being really on the table because she fundamentally has no say in it. I understand Frankenstein’s ask; he’s this very lonely, vulnerable man who is literally at a life-and-death degree of loneliness, saying, ‘Please, help me find someone to be with,’ but what about her? I mean, what about her? And that’s what this movie takes on."

Alongside Jessie Buckley, Christian Bale, and Annette Bening, the American Gothic romance film also stars Peter Sarsgaard as 'Jake Wiles', Jake Gyllenhaal as 'Ronnie Reed', and Penélope Cruz as 'Myrna Mallow.' The other cast members are Julianne Hough, John Magaro, Jeannie Berlin, Linda Emond, Louis Cancelmi, Matthew Maher, and Zlatko Buric.

For the uninitiated, The Bride! had its world premiere at the Empire Leicester Square in London, on February 26, 2026. Soon after the premiere, cinephiles took to their X (formerly Twitter) handles. A user wrote, "Maggie Gyllenhaal’s #TheBrideMovie swings BIG — ferocious, funny, chaotic, romantic and fueled by another knockout Jessie Buckley performance. Buckley and Bale are a dream pairing because they’re both actors who fully commit and disappear into their roles. They bring a raw intensity and unpredictability that make this inventive take on the Bride/Frankenstein story work. THE BRIDE! feels like a love letter to classic moviegoing wrapped inside a bold, modern monster movie. Honestly, we need more films like this."

Another user penned, "Maggie Gyllenhaal's #TheBride is wild and audacious. Buckley & Bale thrill in a movie that feels like what JOKER: FOLIE A DEUX desperately wished it was. Gyllenhaal's script has a lot of threads, but it doesn't weave in perfectly. unlike anything out there." A third user wrote, "Adored #TheBride. One of the most electric movies I've seen in a while, funny, brutal, so visually interesting and just... f***ing cool. Jessie Buckley (wild, sensational) + Christian Bale (goofy, great) leave it all on the inky floor. Maggie Gyllenhaal is the real deal!"
