Sushmita Sen and Aishwarya Rai made the nation proud by winning the Miss Universe and the Miss World titles respectively. However, the two beauties competed against each other during the 1994 Miss India pageant. Sushmita was crowned Miss India 1994, while Aishwarya Rai came as the first runner-up.
Do you know Sushmita Sen broke out in tears thinking that Aishwarya Rai would win the pageant? Yes, in a recent interview with ANI, ad guru Prahlad Kakkar shared the details from the 1994 Miss India beauty pageant. Recalling the same, he said:
“I had escorted Aishwarya to Goa with her mother. I met Sushmita there at the thing. I had access to the changing room, much to the organiser's dismay. He tried to stop me and questioned my identity. I told them, 'You can't stop me. One day, halfway through the competition, Sushmita was weeping copiously in one corner of the changing room.”
In the same interview, Prahlad Kakkar revealed that when he tried to console Sushmita, she told him that the contest is rigged and that there is no point in putting efforts. Revealing how he assured her about the pageant being fair, Prahalad continued:
“I walked up to her. Even though I was supposed to be from a rival camp, I walked up to her and asked her. She said, 'No, it's all fixed. It's all rigged. We don't know what we are doing here.' When I asked her, she explained how Aishwarya was a bigger model and she would be named the winner.”
During the pageant, Sushmita was a 'nobody', meanwhile, Aishwarya was the 'Lakme girl' and a top model. As a result, the newcomer felt that a lot of attention was being paid to Aishwarya. The ad filmmaker calmed Sushmita and made her understand that the judge, Simone Tata, would be fair in her judgment and that no biased decision would be made. He asked her not to trust what people say and to believe in herself. As a result, Sushmita won the pageant and was crowned Miss India 1994.
Sushmita once recalled contemplating withdrawing her name from the pageant after learning that the gorgeous beauty, Aishwarya Rai, was also going to be a part of it. Moreover, she also highlighted how, in that year, nearly 25 girls had already walked out fearing Aishwarya’s competition.
