It was one of the most scintillating and exciting events for all Indians when Team India defeated Pakistan and won the Asia Cup 2025. It was for the first time that India and Pakistan met in the final of the four-decade-old Asia Cup. A glory that was celebrated without a cup. Yes, for the first time. The champions were denied the trophy because the Indian team refused to receive it from Asian Cricket Council chief, Mohsin Naqvi, whom they felt had not courteously conducted himself in his role.
There is a reason why cricket is called the biggest religion and reality show. The finale was full of exciting climaxes. Post winning the match, team India’s captain, Suryakumar Yadav, donated all his individual match fees from the tournament to the victims of the Pahalgam attack and to the Indian Army. Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Surya Kumar tweeted:
“I have decided to donate my match fees from this tournament to support our Armed Forces and the families of the victims who suffered from the Pahalgam terror attack. You always remain in my thoughts. Jai Hind.”
During the press conference post the match, Surya Kumar Yadav announced the decision and also stated that the match was dedicated to the Indian Army. Considering the total amount of Surya Kumar’s fee, the cricketer earned Rs. 4 lakh per match. With a total of seven matches played in the Asian Cup 2025, Surya Kumar Yadav is set to donate a whopping amount of Rs. 28 lakhs to the Indian Army and the victims of the Pahalgam attack.
The Asian Cup 2025 was a perfect example of the saying "Everything is fair in love and war." And Team India proved it by giving it back to Pakistan, not just on the field, but also off the field. For the first time, captains snubbed handshakes at the toss. Team India chose not to shake hands with the Pakistan team after their first Asia Cup 2025 match on September 14, breaking the usual custom. Dedicating the team’s victory to the Indian armed forces and the families of those killed in the Pahalgam terror attack, he wrote:
“Hope they continue to inspire us all, we give them more reasons on the ground whenever we get an opportunity to make them smile.”
For the first time, the winning team celebrated without a trophy on the night of the final as they refused to take it from Mohsin Naqvi. However, Surya was accused of mixing politics with sports. During a press conference post the match, a journalist from Gulf Today questioned Surya’s sportsmanship, to which he replied that some things in life stood above sporting spirit.
