Priya Dutt Says Post Nargis Dutt's Death, Sunil Dutt Sat Near Her Grave At 3 Am, Sanjay 'Broke Down'

Nargis Dutt was a leading actress in Hindi cinema during the late 40s and 50s. But apart from the fame on the silver screen, she was a deeply loved wife of actor, Sunil Dutt and a mother of her children. Consequently, her demise after a prolonged battle with cancer left a major void in the hearts of her family. They were suffering from major grief, and Priya, who was just 14 at that time, recently recalled how her family, especially her father, Sunil Dutt and brother, Sanjay Dutt, were emotionally affected by the incident.

Priya Dutt reveals Sanjay Dutt's substance addiction became severe after her mother, Nargis Dutt's death

Priya Dutt recently sat down for an interview with Vicky Lalwani and shared that her father, Sunil Dutt held immense love for her mom, Nargis and her death left him broken. He became emotionally hollow and used to walk alone to her grave at 3 am. He simply used to sit there for a long time. Moroever, he was with her mom throughout her treatement in the US. Later, Sunil also looked after her and her siblings including Sanjay Dutt who was dealing with substance addiction. She said:

"My father was a broken man. He couldn't do basic things. He would wake up at night and go to kabristan alone. He would sit there next to her grave. Sometimes, even at 3 in the morning. That's how much he loved her."

She further shared that since they were in the US to look after Nargis Dutt and her treatment, Sanjay started substance abuse in India. Nobody was there to check on him, and things got out of hand. Moroever, Sanjay was shattered by the demise of his mom and her absence at the screening of his debut film, Rocky worsened things. In her words:

"It took about 3 to 3.5 years for bhaiya to recover. He went to a couple of rehab centres in Germany and here, too, but it didn't help. Then he went to the US, where he stayed for nine months. We had no connection with him for those nine months. Dad was not allowed to stay with him. The counsellors there said this boy just doesn't open up. They were looking for a trigger point for him to open up."

When the leading counsellors could not help Sanjay despite various attempts, his father, Sunil Dutt, sent a voice note of Nargis Dutt that he recorded during her treatment in the hospital. It helped the doctors to crack the mental numbness of the Vastaav actor and made him open up to his emotions for better treatment. Since then, the situation changed, and Sanjay was able to cure his addiction. Recalling the incident, Priya said:

"My father had recorded mom's conversations in the hospital. He gave one of those tapes to the counsellor. One day, in a meeting, they played the recording. It was Mom speaking to him. That was the moment of catharsis. Sanjay broke down completely… and everything changed after that."
