Missing Student, Sudiksha Konanki's Parents Request Legal Death Declaration After Two Week's Search

Sudiksha Konanki went missing nearly two weeks ago in Punta Cana. However, after an extensive search, her parents came to make the hardest decision of their lives. According to the reports, the US college student was on spring break when the incident took place.

Missing college student, Sudiksha Konanki's parents have asked the authorities to declare their daughter legally dead

The parents of the US college student, Sudiksha Konanki, wrote to the authorities after the police had extensively searched for their daughter for two weeks. On March 17, 2025, they penned a letter to the authorities requesting them to declare Sudiksha legally dead. In a letter to Dominican police, Subbarayudu Konanki and Sreedevi Konanki stated that the local authorities had come to the conclusion that their daughter drowned the night of the incident. For the unversed, Sudiksha was a 20-year-old student at the University of Pittsburgh. Her parents stated:

"Initiating this process will allow our family to begin the grieving process and address matters related to her absence. While no declaration can truly ease our grief, we trust that this step will bring some closure and enable us to honour her memory."

Authorities are still reviewing the evidence in the case

An anonymous police official has confirmed that they received the letter on March 18, 2025. However, the sheriff of Loudoun County in Virginia, Michael Chapman, issued an official statement on March 18, 2025. The sheriff revealed that the officials have been working rigorously with the Dominican authorities and continue to review the evidence. He stated:

"The disappearance of Sudiksha Konanki is tragic, and we cannot imagine the grief her family has been feeling. Sudiksha’s family has expressed their belief that she drowned. While a final decision to make such a declaration rests with authorities in the Dominican Republic, we will support the Konanki family in every way possible."

Sudiksha Konanki disappeared from the beach on March 6, 2025

Sudiksha Konanki had travelled to the Caribbean nation on March 3, 2025, with five female friends for spring break. According to the police statement, she disappeared from the beach by her hotel in the wee hours of March 6, 2025. Authorities questioned people who were with Sudiksha before her disappearance, including Joshua Riibe, a senior at St. Cloud University in Minnesota.

Dominican police detained Joshua as he was believed to be the last person with Sudiksha. However, he has not been named as a suspect, and Judge Wdwin Rijo has ordered his release as he has been cooperating with the authorities. Joshua appeared in court on March 18, 2025, following a request for the release. According to the transcript of an interview with Joshua Riibe by Dominican media as well as NBC and Telemundo, the duo were drinking on the beach.

He told the police that they were making out in the ocean when they got caught in a current. However, being a former lifeguard, he was able to bring Sudiksha ashore. Joshua further revealed that he vomited upon reaching the shore, and Sudiksha said she was going to grab her things, but when he looked up, she was gone. He concluded by sharing that he was surprised when he heard of her disappearance.

Sudiksha Konanki's parents revealed there is no evidence of foul play

In the letter, Sudiksha Konanki's parents wrote that 'the individual' (Joshua Riibe) last seen with their daughter was cooperating. They added that no evidence of foul play has been found. For the unversed, Sudiksha Konanki was born in India and later became a US permanent resident.
