Sudhir gave love another chance when he fell in love with Renu Saluja, a renowned Hindi film editor. Renu was six years elder to Sudhir and it was her love for her work that attracted Sudhir towards her. Renu won four National Awards for Best Editing for films like Parinda, Dharavi, Sardar and Godmother. Prior to Sudhir, Renu was married to filmmaker, Vidhu Vinod Chopra.
Renu Saluja passed away in 2000 after a long battle with stomach cancer. Renu’s death had a devastating impact on Sudhir, who considered suicide. Once in a throwback interview with The Times of India, Sudhir spoke about the same and said:
“I have gotten on with my life and have done a lot of work after she died but I keep trying to find the ‘Renu cut in my films’ — that rhythm she brought to my films. The value of a good editor is that they tell you what you have actually made while you are caught in what you think you have made. I did think once of committing suicide after Renu died. I do go through periods of sadness, but I don’t think there is much value in that.”
Chitrangda made her acting debut with Sudhir Mishra’s 2005 film, Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi and was later seen in his films like Yeh Saali Zindagi, and Inkaar. There were reports that the two were seeing each other and were also spotted together frequently. It was also rumoured that her closeness with the filmmaker led to her divorce from golfer, Jyoti Randhawa. When Sudhir was asked about the rumours in a throwback interview, he said:
“The roles of women I write are slightly mysterious and they are women who will never totally belong to you and are yet feminine and attractive. Chitrangda personifies that for me and I don’t have to convince her as she just comes and plays it. She is quite strong-willed and has said no to me for a role. She never talks to me about her personal life. She works and goes away.”
