Nagavara Ramarao Narayana Murthy, also called Narayana Murthy, sparked a huge debate in India in October 2023 when the 77-year-old spoke about India's working culture and said that the youth of India should be prepared to work for 70 hours per week. Now, his wife, Sudha Murthy, opened up on the 70-hour work week debate that created touted controversy in the entire nation.
Narayana Murthy is the co-founder of Infosys, which is the biggest company in the IT domain. Sudha, in a recent interview with NDTV, opined that when the youth is passionate about their work, time could never be a limitation. She revealed that Narayana at the start of his career worked for more than 70 hours weekly, which was why Infosys was made with minimum funds and the dream became possible. Reflecting on the statement made by her husband, Sudha said:
"God has given 24 hours to all, whether you are "rich or poor, beautiful or ugly. How you want to spend it is left to you. And if you want to do anything passionately, it requires time. And if you are passionate about your work, then your partner should support it."
Going ahead in the interview, Sudha revealed that no magic wand could make Infosys so large. It was sheer hard work, part of luck, part of the correct timing or in the correct place; everything is there. She further revealed the sacrifices she had made to ensure that Infosys became big. Sudha had to balance her family life as her husband had a demanding career. In her words:
"I made that decision, and I also decided there was no point cribbing and telling your husband, Oh, you are not there, because he is doing a bigger work."
Murthy revealed that her husband's dedication to his work was not unique and also noted how other professions like journalists and doctors also work long hours as they have to achieve their goals. Sudha also shared that she had to make her path to being occupied and not think that she did not have time but enjoyed what she had. She used to write earlier but started writing a bit more.
Earlier, in an interview with India Today, Narayana shared that he used to work 85-90 hours a week till he retired. He received a scholarship right from his pre-university in 1961. All his friends who went to engineering college received a lot of help from the government in terms of their fees - a highly discounted figure. He shared:
