Shekhar Kapur's Ex-Wife, Suchitra Says She Failed To Protect Kaveri Amid Divorce, 'It Was Unfair'

Everyone thinks that children born to celebrities live a comfortable life and get to make an easy entry into showbiz, but they fail to see how those kids grow up dealing with the flip side of fame. The unwanted media attention and scrutiny, especially when their family had personal issues is difficult. Kaveri Kapur, daughter of Shekhar Kapur and Suchitra Krishnamoorthi, faced a similar turmoil. The young actress's parents, filmmaker, Shekhar Kapur and mother, Suchitra Krishnamoorthi tied the knot in 1997 but parted ways. In a recent interview, Suchitra shared how their daughter had to face the brunt of their decision. 

Suchitra Krishnamoorthi reveals her daughter, Kaveri, was 'terribly affected' with her divorce 

Shekhar Kapur's divorce from Suchitra Krishnamoorthi broke the headlines during the 2000s. After Kaveri shared her difficult experience through her parent's 'very public' separation, Suchitra Krishnamoorthi sat down for an interview with News 18 India. She shared that her daughter used to go to school when she got to know countless negative stories about her parents' separation in the media through her friends, which was hard for her. Suchitra, who feels responsible for not being able to protect her daughter, said:

"She was terribly affected. If I was more regulated and in control of my own emotions and cleverer rather than being so emotionally volatile, I would've never subjected her to that. She didn't deserve it. No child deserves that kind of negative exposure. Every child loves their parents equally. For her to see that rift in the press and hear things through her friends is very unfair."

Suchitra personally went through a difficult time because she had to deal with her emotions after a broken marriage and protect her daughter from the immense scrutiny around them. A few days back, Kaveri, who is trying to make her way in showbiz shared that the 'very public' divorce of her parents took a toll on her mental health when she realised the disadvantage of being born to popular parents. Suchitra mentioned that when she thinks about the past, she feels she should not have reacted to the wrong stories written about her and their family during that phase. In her words:

"For a news headline, they'll provoke and trigger you into trauma till you react. And you realise that you've to be clever enough to handle it. You shouldn't get triggered. You've to respond and not react. And I've failed very often at that. I had been triggered, and I reacted."

In the same conversation, Suchitra recalled that when she used to go for court hearings of her divorce case, some paps would suddenly come and take pictures of her. At the same time, she got calls from some journalists asking for updates on her divorce and personal life. Despite giving a stern reply, it wasn't easy for Suchitra to stay calm. She said:

"I would just say that it's none of their business, and I would only talk about it when I want to. There are things that you can't avoid unless you're as regulated and calm as the Buddha so that nothing external can disturb you. In that sense, I've failed a lot. I'm too volatile. I don't know if that's a flaw, but that's just who I am."

Suchitra Krishnamoorthi was 10 or 12 years old when she used to be obsessed with Shekhar Kapur. She later met and tied the knot with him when she was 22 and he was 52. Since he was the same age as her mother, her family was against it, but they married in 1997 and welcomed Kaveri in 2001. But, issues developed in their marriage after Suchitra accused him of infidelity with Preity Zinta, who gave her first audition to Shekhar Kapur, and the filmmaker suggested her name for Dil Se. Prity denied the claims and mentioned Suchitra was mentally ill. They separated after an ugly divorce in 2007, where Shekhar had to allegedly pay a hefty alimony.
